Best Exercises for Mental Health: Running, Swimming and Cycling Lead the Way in the UK

Share

Ahead of World Mental Health Day 2025, new research from natural active foot care specialist The Feets reveals that physical activity is one of the most effective ways to manage mental health challenges — with running emerging as the nation’s favourite mood booster.

The survey of the UK public*, commissioned by The Feets, found that more than half of us (54%) have experienced mental health challenges such as stress, depression, or anxiety at some point in our lives. Of those, an overwhelming 81% reported that engaging in physical activity helped them manage or alleviate the symptoms of poor mental health.

So why is exercise so beneficial?

  • 22% cited the benefit of simply getting out of the house and into the fresh air.
  • 17% said exercise helps reduce stress and anxiety.
  • 12% reported a sense of achievement, while another 12% highlighted the distraction it provides from negative thoughts.
  • 11% found that regular exercise adds structure and routine to their day.

When looking at the types of activities most commonly used to support mental health, swimming, running, and cycling topped the list. These activities are flexible, low on equipment needs, and can be done solo or with others — making them accessible to almost anyone.

The Feets also conducted a deeper survey among participants who engaged in nine different sports or physical activities, asking them to rate how each impacted their mental health on a scale of 1 to 10.

  • Running came out on top, with an average score of 7.65, confirming its reputation as a highly effective mental health activity.
  • Swimming ranked second at 7.59, despite being the most commonly undertaken activity.
  • Golf (7.49), racket sports (7.39), and cycling (7.34) rounded out the top five.

These findings underline the important link between physical activity and mental wellbeing. Simple, accessible forms of exercise — from a brisk run in the park to a few lengths in the pool — can make a tangible difference in managing stress, anxiety, and depression.

Whether it’s stepping outside for a morning run, hitting the pool, or picking up a racket, taking part in regular physical activity is a proven way to support your mental health — proving that even small steps can have a big impact.
