Experts Say It’s the Perfect Time to Seal Your Driveway — Here’s How to Do It Properly

A well-maintained driveway can increase your home’s worth by up to 10%, that’s a potential £26,900 added to the average UK house price of £269,000.
Bill Jarvis, Driveway Sealer specialist at Premium Paints, offers some tips on how to seal your driveway, why it’s important, and mistakes you need to avoid:
“Sealing your driveway is a simple, cost-effective way to protect it from damage and reduce the need for repairs later, as well as improving the overall appearance,” says Jarvis. “After several dry weeks, the conditions are just right for sealing. It’s warm enough for the product to cure, without the heat of summer that can dry it too fast.”
Acting now can prevent cracks and surface erosion, make it easier to maintain and clean, and extend the life of your driveway
How to seal your driveway properly:
Clean and prep the surface
- Clear away leaves, dirt or debris with a stiff broom or blower. Pressure wash or scrub the surface to get rid of any oil or grime, then let it dry completely. If you’re sealing tarmac or using a coloured concrete sealer, you can fill any cracks or holes with a suitable filler. For clear sealers, skip this step as filled cracks can show through and spoil the finish.
Choose the right sealer
- Not all driveway sealers are the same, so matching the sealer to your surface type is key. Look for products specifically formulated for tarmac, concrete or paving to get the best results, and consider the finish you want. Using the right formulation ensures lasting results and avoids compatibility issues.
Apply carefully
- Stir or shake the sealer thoroughly before use, then apply it using a roller, brush or sprayer, depending on the product instructions. Work in small, manageable sections to avoid causing any streaks. Apply it evenly in thin coats; one or two should be enough, then allow around 24 hours before using it.
“Always check the weather forecast and make sure you’ve got a fully dry window. If it rains before the sealer cures, you’ll need to start again.”
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Skipping the prep or applying it to a damp surface
- Using the wrong sealer for your driveway type
- Applying too thick a layer. This can cause it to peel or flake off
- Sealing too often, every 3 years or so should be fine
How to keep it looking good all year:
- Sweep regularly so that debris doesn’t build up
- Wash it occasionally with soap and water
- Keep an eye out for small cracks, and treat them early if you get them
