Navigating the Complexities of Being a Single Parent and Dating Other Single Parents

single parent dating

TL;DR: A conscious effort to make time for dating is needed. Don’t ignore red flags in single fathers and mothers. Reflect on why you want to date and what you want in a relationship.

How to make time for dating as a single parent

Raising a child by yourself is expensive, and many parents rely on friends or family to babysit because they can trust them and they’re free or cheap. If the parent lacks this type of support network, they need to hire a babysitter. Most dates are in the evening, and the child will probably be in bed anyway, especially if they are young. Toddlers normally go to bed around 7:30 or 8:00, making it easy for the babysitter, and you don’t need to rush home because the child will probably be asleep the whole time. Ideally, you’ll have a date once a week.

Red flags when dating a single father

In the best-case scenario, a single mother will meet a loving and responsible man who happens to be a single parent as well. There are many such men. According to Pew Research, the number of single-father households grew ninefold between 1960 and 2010. According to 2024 statistics, more than 3.3 million men are single fathers, comprising about a fifth of all single-parent households. However, no woman should ignore the red flags when dating a man with kids, such as a man who keeps using his children as an excuse to cancel dates or generally keep the relationship from developing. If this happens, he may not be ready for the new relationship.

A man who prioritizes a new relationship over his child is likely to be an absent parent who’ll eventually become an absent partner.

Some animosity between the man and his ex is normal, especially in difficult co-parenting situations. Yet, constantly arguing with the other parent or bad-mouthing them may indicate he hasn’t gotten over the family breakdown or that his relationship style revolves around tension and hostility, showing a lack of maturity.

Red flags when dating a single mother

A woman who drops hints that you’d be a good parent from the start could be looking for a co-parent and not a partner. Most of the time, dating a single mom should be like dating a childfree woman. You should be romancing each other and having fun.

She shouldn’t be involving you in drama with her ex. It’s a big red flag if she encourages you to interfere in the relationship early on, whether to defend her or for another reason.

Reflect on your motivation to date

Single parents benefit from self-reflection as much as anyone else, perhaps far more than people without children. Do you just want to meet new people? Are you looking for companionship or a serious relationship? Recognizing your motivations will ensure a fulfilling and positive dating journey. Some single parents use dating to distract themselves from the burden of adjusting to life after separation or divorce, which is not fair to them or to potential partners. It’s best to wait until one has truly accepted their new role as a single parent.

Final thoughts

Navigating the complexities of being a single parent while dating other single parents requires balancing emotional needs and parenting responsibilities. Both individuals come with not only their own hopes and histories but also children whose well-being and schedules affect the relationship. Coordinating time together can be difficult, as babysitters, custody arrangements, and school activities often take priority.

They also need to be mindful of how, when, or whether to introduce children. If the relationship doesn’t seem to hold potential, there’s no need to bring the children into the equation. When approached with patience and clear communication, dating another single parent can deliver a shared appreciation for resilience, which is crucial to any relationship’s success. Research shows that being in a relationship with a resilient partner is associated with better physical and mental health.
