IS YOUR HOME OFFICIALLY OLD-FASHIONED? MODERN BRITS REVEAL THE HOME DÉCOR TRENDS THAT ARE NOW CONSIDERED OUTDATED, INCLUDING LANDLINE PHONES, CARPETED BATHROOMS, SINGLE GLAZING, A SEPARATE DINING ROOM – AND A GOLDFISH POND

A new report of homeowners has revealed a list of home décor trends that are being consigned to history, with cottage style kitchen units (23 percent), and word art on the walls, such as a “Live, Laugh, Love” sign, featuring in the list.

But still having a landline topped the list of signs your house is outdated (66 percent), as well as a DVD or CD player on display (38 percent), shabby chic furniture (13 percent) – or a coloured bathroom suite such as brown or avocado (37 percent).

The concept of the perfect home is changing as a result of people being more conscious about their home’s impact on the environment (38 percent), according to the report from Daikin UK.

Top of the list of home must-haves include open-plan living spaces (50 percent), solar panels (44 percent) and outdoor kitchens (14 percent).

A vegetable patch (34 percent) and a home office (32 percent) also made the list of most desirable features for modern Brits.

A kitchen island (35 percent), a Smart Energy meter (35 percent) and LED lighting (35 percent) are all considered must-haves in a modern home, along with underfloor heating (32 percent) and integrated music systems (25 percent).

Eight in ten (81 percent) wish their current home was more environmentally friendly.

Interior designer and TV personality, Laurence Llewellyn Bowen has partnered with Daikin to highlight the importance of sustainable climate solutions for the home. Commenting on the findings he said: “This research shows how what we want from our homes is changing and that people are not only thinking decoratively but also environmentally when it comes to what they want their home to be like, and what it says to others. Many of the ‘modern home must haves’, like heat pumps, are thoughtfully designed and can be incorporated seamlessly into homes without compromising on style.”

Iain Bevan, Residential New Business Director at Daikin UK, which commissioned the survey, says: “Installing environmentally friendly heating and energy solutions in your property makes it more attractive to buyers and can increase its value. Research shows that a property moving from an EPC rating of F to a C could increase its value by an average of 15%, or almost £56,267 when looking at the national average asking price.”
