Goodbye fitted units — freestanding kitchens are trending now

Share

New data reveals that searches for ‘unfitted kitchen ideas’ increased by a staggering 5,000% on Google in the past 30 days in the UK, signalling a shift in kitchen design preferences.

There has been a rise in incorporating freestanding kitchen elements into modern design, say experts at online home decor brand Plank Hardware. Unlike traditional fitted kitchens where cabinets and appliances are built into the structure of the room, an unfitted kitchen consists of individual pieces of furniture and storage that can be moved or rearranged as needed.

“The unfitted kitchen is characterised by freestanding furniture, open shelving and a mix-and-match aesthetic”, says Tom Revill, co-founder and creative director of Plank Hardware. He continues, “It’s a style that prioritises flexibility, individuality and a more relaxed approach to kitchen interiors. It exudes a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, reminiscent of traditional country kitchens.

“The growing trend marks a departure from the traditional fitted kitchens that have dominated homes for decades. Here are the key staples that make up an unfitted kitchen.

  1. Freestanding furniture

“At the heart of an unfitted kitchen are freestanding pieces of furniture, such as islands, dressers and cabinets. These pieces are not fixed to the walls, allowing for a more adaptable and flexible layout. A large, freestanding kitchen island serves as a central hub, providing a workspace, storage or seating.

“Other freestanding elements, like a butcher’s block kitchen island, farmhouse style dresser or a pantry cupboard, can be mixed and matched to create a cohesive yet varied look. We would recommend starting with a few freestanding pieces and building around them, these pieces can serve as focal points and set the tone for the entire kitchen.

  1. Open shelving

“Open shelving is a staple of the unfitted kitchen, replacing traditional upper cabinets with shelves that display everyday items like plates, bowls and glassware. The open storage concept adds a sense of airiness and accessibility, making it easy to grab what you need while also being aesthetically pleasing.

“The shelves can be made from a variety of materials, such as wood or metal, and can be styled to reflect the overall aesthetic of the kitchen. The openness encourages a more curated display, where functional items double as decorative elements.

  1. Mixed materials and styles

“One of the defining characteristics of an unfitted kitchen is its use of mixed materials and styles. Unlike traditional fitted kitchens, where uniformity is key, an unfitted kitchen thrives on contrasts. You might find a rustic wooden table paired with industrial metal steels, or a sleek marble countertop alongside a weathered butcher block.

“This mix-and-match approach allows for greater creativity and personalisation, enabling homeowners to combine different textures, colours, and finishes in a way that reflects their individual taste. The result is a space that feels both unique and inviting.

  1. Eclectic decor

“An unfitted kitchen is often characterised by its eclectic decor and accessories. This can include a mix of vintage and modern elements, such as retro appliances alongside contemporary fixtures – such as pendant lights. Decorative items such as artwork, textiles, such as tea towels, sink skirts and potted plants add layers of texture and colour, further enhancing the kitchen’s warm and inviting atmosphere.

  1. Statement taps

“One of the hallmarks of an unfitted kitchen is the use of a statement tap that stands out as a unique feature. This might be a vintage-style brass kitchen mixer tap, or a sleek, modern matte black tap that contrasts with more rustic elements of the kitchen.

“Just as with other elements in the unfitted kitchen, mixing metals and finishes is a common approach when choosing a tap. Choose a finish that contrasts with your cabinetry hardware. Mixing and matching hardware finishes can enhance your unfitted kitchen design scheme and elevate your entire space. If your kitchen cabinets are topped off with dark and daring matte black hardware, an antique brass tap would perfectly off-set the design of your kitchen.”
