Car boots are back in season. Dan Hatfield is a third-generation pawnbroker and money-making expert, hoping to help turn one persons trash into another persons cash.
Car boots are the perfect place to find high-end fashion items to cut-price antiques. Similarly, it’s a great way to unload unwanted items and make some money.
For Sellers:
- Arrive early. It’s important to not be one of the last.
- Find the sweet spot. This is usually located in the middle of the sale and ideally, next to the burger van (!)
- Be prepared. Make sure you pack everything the night before, categorise your items so it’s easy for buyers to sift through.
- When you’ve arrived, unpack your items strategically. Toys should be on the floor in front of your display table enticing kids over at their eyeline. Bric-a-brac should be laid on the table. Keep your more expensive stuff on at the back in case of anyone with light-fingers.
- Group your together that are priced the same to make it easy for buyers. It also helps you to avoid having to price things individually.
- If you think you’ve found a bargain, use the Google Lens app to compare prices online.
- Things that usually do well at car boots are things you can’t normally buy online, or things which are unusual and catch the eye.

For Bargain Finders
- Bring loose change and your own bag. Sellers will love you for this.
- Haggling is important, and remember, people sell to people they like, and people buy off people they like.
- Get there early as a buyer to catch those one-of-a-kind items which will easily get snapped up…and stay late as you can bag a bargain right at the end. Sellers don’t typically want to take anything home with them.
- Before buying something big, think practically. How will you get your items home?!
