What to do…
Renowned food event, Taste of Little Italy, returns 18-19 June, promising a gastronomic delight spanning across 48 blocks of the neighborhood. With over 20 participating restaurants, guests will receive a Taste Passport upon arrival, allowing them to explore a range of flavors and diverse cuisines from pizza and pasta to burgers and sushi accompanied by live music and a vibrant atmosphere.
The Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art (MOPA@SDMA) welcomed three new exhibitions this spring. Picture This: Recent Acquisitions, open until 4 August, showcases a variety of important themes and genres including Portraiture, Abstraction/Manipulation, and Modernism. Storyteller: Work by Holly Roberts, open until 18 August, is a symbolic reflection of Robert’s life and the imperfections in the world around her. The Artist Speaks: Cara Romero, open 27 April – 20 October, features the work of Cara Romero, an enrolled citizen of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, who was raised between the contrasting settings of the reservation in the Mojave Desert, California, and the urban sprawl of Houston, Texas. She draws inspiration from her individual identity and lived experiences.
Comic-Con Museum will open three world-premiere exhibits as a participating World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 community initiative. Exhibits include “Becoming Betty Boop,” an exclusive exhibit showcasing the history and evolution of the iconic cartoon character, “Border Blitz: Artistas del Cómic de Tijuana,” featuring the art of Charles Glaubitz, Alejandra Yépiz Portillo, and Urbano Mata, and “Collaboration(s)! A Journey with John Jennings,” that will explore the many graphic novel and comic art collaborations in the world of John Jennings.
Where to eat…
Following a 10-year closure, the iconic Whaling Bar is now open in La Jolla. Boasting a redesigned space, the Whaling Bar invites guests to savor meticulously crafted cocktails amidst original nautical-themed decor, retaining its nostalgic charm and significance amongst the La Jolla community. With a cocktail menu managed by the SDCM Restaurant Group, the bar promises to recapture the charm that made it a favorite haunt of notable locals and luminaries like Tom Hanks and Robin Williams.
This spring, Postino, the all-day restaurant and wine-café, is debuting two flagship locations in San Diego, in Little Italy and Del Mar’s One Paseo urban village. The wine-cafés will serve an ever-changing selection of boutique wines and a decked-out menu of bruschetta, paninis, salads and a lineup of crave-worthy charcuterie boards and shareables will be served daily, for lunch and dinner, plus brunch on weekends.
