garden trends for 2025

Britons are being given top tips on the garden trends they’ll want to include in their outside space in 2025.

The garden design experts at Pergolux UK have pulled together the emerging trends with sustainability and creating functional spaces coming top of the list.

Over recent years the garden is seen as an extension of the home with homeowners bringing the outdoors in and creating multi-functional areas.

It’s been reported that UK households have collectively spent roughly £8 billion on retail garden products in the past.

2025 will see that trend grow further alongside opting for low maintenance designs, making sustainable changes and creating weather resilient gardens.

Sam Stevens, gardening expert at Pergolux UK says: “2025 garden trends consider both function and lifestyle whilst combining sustainable practice.

“Hosting at home has equally been a quickly growing trend and people are focused on having spaces that are suitable for gatherings.

“Sustainability is also at the heart of a lot of homeowners’ decisions due to climate issues, so the reduction of using cheap, plastic materials is prevalent.

“Durable materials like zinc and steel have been rising over the past months due to their longevity, and of rustic style and will continue to be a popular choice for garden structures.”

Top 10 garden trends for 2025:

Growing your own

Growing your own produce has risen in popularity since the pandemic inspired 3.5million people to start gardening in 2020*  – and the inspiration isn’t going anywhere for 2025. Expect to see more gardens with a vegetable patch.

Durable materials

Low maintenance, durable materials will continue to be popular. Zinc and corten steel have become preferred choices for gardens due to their weather resistant properties and rustic aesthetic, offering a more durable and sustainable alternative to cheaper plastic materials.

Climate conscious

Given the growing concerns about climate change, many homeowners are prioritising sustainable garden improvements in 2025. This includes creating compost heaps to recycle food into nutrient rich soil and installing rainwater harvesting systems to water gardens in an eco-friendly way.

Outdoor living space

Areas to host and entertain in gardens have always been popular. Add outdoor furniture and shaded areas using pergolas and summer houses, creating great places to have gatherings throughout the year.

Weather resilient gardens

After the unpredictable weather from this past year we’re expected to see a rise in weather resilient gardens. There will be a particular focus on creating a flood resilient garden with hardy plants and good drainage.

Minimalist design

Minimalist garden design will rise in popularity in 2025 due to a growing desire for simplicity and tranquility. People are seeking calm, uncluttered spaces that promote mindfulness and wellbeing.

Holiday inspired

52% of Brits are opting for staycations which has also increased the desire for people to create a vacation-like experience at home.  This can be done through decking and greenery as well as soft, mood lighting.

Vibrant colours

Vibrant gardens filled with lush flora and fauna are making a comeback. Interest in plant care is growing and classic flowers like peonies, lavender, and geraniums are becoming popular choices for beginners due to their ease of care, making them perfect for starting a thriving, colorful garden.

Decorative art pieces

Incorporating art and decorative pieces into gardens will be a major trend in 2025 as people look to fill their outdoor spaces with personality. Sculptures, mosaic paths, and unique furniture will add visual interest while helping to create a personal identity for each garden.

Wildlife friendly

Another of the key gardening trends gaining momentum is the focus on creating wildlife friendly spaces. More gardeners are incorporating bird feeders, hibernation boxes, and ponds to encourage biodiversity and support local ecosystems.
