Why Hiking Holidays Are Becoming the Go-To UK Break for 2026
It’s the start of the year, and with annual leave allowances renewed for many, it’s time to think about travel for the year ahead. Rather than traditional poolside breaks, travellers are increasingly prioritising active and wellness-focused trips in 2026.
Travel expert, Jerry Rebbeck from Wheelwrights Holiday Cottages shares his insights into the growing hiking and fitness holiday trend.
“Holidays built around hikes and walks have become increasingly popular, and are set to be big in 2026. This is something we’re seeing first-hand with our own guests, with more people asking for itineraries built around walking routes or planning their trips around hikes in the first place,” says Jerry. “That shift is reflected in Google searches too, with searches for the term ‘hiking holidays’ up 345% since February 2021.”
Social media activity reflects this growing interest, with TikTok data showing the hashtag #hikersoftiktok generating over 2,000 posts in the UK in the past three months alone, growing by 165% during this period as more people share their hiking experiences online.
“Holiday goers are prioritising mentally restorative trips in 2026, seeking out holidays which will reduce stress and revitalise energy in an active way. Hiking is great for your mental health by combining physical exercise, time away from screens, and immersion in nature, all proven to help boost positive brain chemicals and reduce stress. It’s no wonder more Brits are turning to hiking holidays to properly disconnect from the digital world and return home feeling mentally refreshed.”
Why the UK is the perfect destination for a hiking holiday
“We are extremely lucky in the UK that we have 15 national parks, which serve as gorgeous backdrops for hiking holidays,” says Jerry. “From mountain routes to gentle riverside ambles, and countryside paths to forest trails, there is something for every type of walker.”

“Much like other UK national parks, the Lake District attracts visitors from all over the world to explore the multitude of trails. The combination of mountains, hills, and valleys makes it an ideal setting to clear your head and spend time outdoors. This is reflected in the number of repeat guests who return year after year to stay and hike.”
“One of the best things about the Lake District is how accessible it is, with trails suitable for all ages and abilities. We see families looking for manageable walks, alongside more experienced and confident hikers seeking more challenging routes. This makes it an ideal place for both a family hiking holiday, and a more extreme backpacking adventure.”
What to know when booking a hiking holiday
As more Brits look to embrace the hiking holiday trend, Jerry shares advice on how to best do this. “Before you book your hiking holiday, think carefully about where your accommodation is located. If you are staying in one place as a base and travelling from this point, you’ll want to be somewhere where you can access a range of hiking locations each day, whether that be on foot or by bus.”

“If you are moving between campsites or holiday cottages as part of a multi-stop trip, planning becomes even more important. Mapping out your route in advance and factoring in travel time between locations and check-in times ensures your accommodation works around your hiking plans. Getting it right can make a big difference in how relaxed the trip feels.”
“It’s also important to consider who is coming with you on your trip, and what their hiking abilities are. For example, if there are a range of abilities, it’s always best to aim for easier terrain and shorter distances, so everyone can participate and enjoy themselves.”
“Hiking is great fun and incredible for both your mental and physical fitness, but being prepared is essential. Always make sure to plan routes carefully and carry safety equipment such as torches, first aid kits, flares, and compasses. Ensure you are dressed appropriately for the conditions, and allow enough daylight to complete your hike safely. With all that in place, you will have peace of mind to have an enjoyable and relaxing time hiking the day away,” says Jerry.
