But which cars actually deliver? A new study by Ovoko, one of Europe’s largest online marketplaces for used car parts, set out to find the answer. The team analysed popular business vehicles across the UK, scoring them on what matters most to professionals who rack up the miles.
“Business drivers face a different set of priorities than weekend motorists,” says Kazimieras Urbonas, Supplier Excellence Manager at Ovoko. “Comfort for those long hauls, running costs that add up sensibly over the year, and tech that makes the job easier. The right car becomes a mobile office. The wrong one makes every journey feel like a chore.”
The Study
The study examined vehicles available in the UK market, measuring comfort ratings, fuel costs per 100 km, average purchase prices, safety scores from Euro NCAP, and available technology features. Each car was given a Business Driver Score out of 100, with higher scores indicating better overall suitability for business use. Comfort carried the most weight in the scoring, followed by equal consideration for fuel costs, purchase price, safety, and tech features.

1. Skoda Superb – Business Driver Score: 60.83
The Skoda Superb clinches first place with a score of 60.83, proving that badge snobbery has no place in sensible business motoring. With a perfect 5-star comfort rating and 5-star safety score, it ticks the boxes that matter when you’re covering hundreds of miles each week. The purchase price of £39,705 makes it the most affordable option in the top tier, while fuel costs of £31.46 per 100 km remain reasonable for a petrol model.
“What makes the Superb stand out is how it balances everything a business driver needs,” explains Urbonas. “You get a spacious, comfortable cabin that won’t leave you aching after a full day of driving, top safety features, and a price tag that finance departments will actually approve.”
The tech package includes infotainment, connectivity, driver assistance, and chassis features – everything you need without the premium brand markup.
The Superb’s four technology features put it ahead of pricier rivals in terms of practical equipment. For professionals who need a reliable workhorse that doesn’t compromise on comfort or safety, it’s hard to argue with the numbers.
2. BMW 5 Series – Business Driver Score: 54.155
The BMW 5 Series lands in second with 54.155, offering premium credentials at a premium price. Like the Superb, it scores a perfect 5 for both comfort and safety. Where it really shines is fuel efficiency, at just £5.96 per 100 km, it delivers the lowest running costs in the entire top 10. However, the £76,605 price tag nearly doubles the Superb’s cost.
“The 5 Series makes financial sense if you’re covering serious mileage,” says Urbonas. “Those fuel savings add up fast. Do 30,000 miles a year and you’ll save over £1,200 compared to the Superb on fuel alone. But you need to offset that against the higher purchase price, as it’ll take years to break even if you’re buying outright.”
The BMW comes with three technology features: infotainment, connectivity, and driver assistance. For professionals who value the badge and can justify the upfront cost, the 5 Series delivers on prestige and efficiency.
3. Renault 5 – Business Driver Score: 51.935
The Renault 5 takes bronze with 51.935, offering the lowest entry price of the top three at £28,995. Its comfort rating of 4.5 sits just below the top scorers, while fuel costs of £10.95 per 100 km make it the second-cheapest to run in this group. The safety score of 4 is the only area where it falls behind.
“The Renault 5 is perfect for business users who don’t need the space of a saloon or the prestige of a German badge,” notes Urbonas. “You’re getting solid comfort, low running costs, and a price point that makes it accessible for smaller businesses or contractors.”
The charging infrastructure means you can top up while you work, and the tech package covers the essentials: infotainment, connectivity, and charging features.
What holds it back from the top spot is the slightly lower comfort and safety ratings. But for urban professionals or those covering moderate mileage, it offers excellent value.
