Interior Design Red Flags That Could Be Ruining Your Love Life

With nearly a quarter of Brits (23%) admitting that poor interior taste could be a serious dealbreaker in relationships—and one in seven (14%) confessing to getting the dreaded “interior ick” from a date’s home decor—interior designer James Pilling from sofa retailer My Furniture reveals the design choices driving Brits away in the dating world.
Drawing from his professional experience and a deep dive into TikTok trends and engagement data, James pinpoints the key interior mistakes that not only impact how a home looks but also shape perceptions of its owner.
Trending but Troubling: Popular Decor Choices
“Social media staples like vines, LED lights, and star projector night lights are everywhere right now,” says James. “But if these trends aren’t integrated thoughtfully, they risk coming off as ‘basic’ or uninspired, and can actually detract from a room’s aesthetic appeal.”
Clutter Overload: When Personal Items Become Overwhelming
“Spaces crowded with extensive Lego sets, figurine collections, or singular plants can quickly feel chaotic and cluttered,” James explains. “Cluttered surfaces not only make cleaning difficult but also give an impression of disorganisation that’s off-putting.”

Mismatched & Misguided Decoration
“Certain choices like Tuscan boob lights, grommeted drapes, or mismatched accessories such as teddy bears in adult bedrooms can create an awkward and unplanned vibe,” James notes. “Rather than appearing creative, these can suggest carelessness.”
Art & Décor: Polarising Picks
“Pop art replicas, graffiti-inspired pieces, and decorative ladders can be divisive,” he says. “While they make a statement, they may not appeal to everyone. Unframed posters or art can also make a space feel temporary or juvenile, unintentionally implying a lack of maturity.”
Sentimental but Outdated Items
“Nostalgic items like childhood trophies, lava lamps, and figurine collections, while personally meaningful, often come off as design faux pas,” James observes. “They can make a space feel stuck in the past rather than fresh and modern.”

The Upholstery Issue
“Upholstery is often one of the first things noticed,” James stresses. “Stained or threadbare fabric looks unappealing and can suggest neglect. Keeping upholstery clean and well-maintained is essential to creating an inviting space and showing attention to detail.”
The Importance of Lighting
“A poorly lit room feels gloomy and unwelcoming no matter how stylish the decor is,” James explains. “Layered lighting—dimmable overhead lights, lamps, and feature lights—creates a warm, versatile atmosphere, signaling a well-thought-out home.”
Cohesive Aesthetic Matters
“Randomly selecting items without a cohesive plan leads to disjointed interiors,” James concludes. “Oversized furniture in small rooms disrupts flow and makes spaces feel cramped. A unified design vision is key to creating a welcoming, stylish home.”
