If you’re going on holiday this summer, you might want to take a few of your favourite jewellery pieces with you – and if you are planning to get engaged, you might be wondering about the best way to sneak the all important ring into your luggage.
Experts from luxury jewellery brand GLAMIRA have prepared tips on travelling with jewellery, in order to keep your necklaces, bracelets or even an engagement ring safe on your trip.
Ozge Seren, jewellery expert at GLAMIRA, comments:
“If you’re travelling with jewellery this summer, there are a few things you can do to keep your pieces safe and tidy inside your luggage – here are some of my top tips. Something everyone should be aware of, if you are travelling with special, expensive pieces of jewellery, is insurance. Look into adding these pieces onto your travel insurance, so that if anything should happen to them on your trip, you’ll be reimbursed.”

Top tips for travelling with jewellery
- Anti tarnish strips can help protect the condition of your gold, silver or platinum jewellery while travelling. Just slip one of these strips of treated paper in with each item and it will absorb any pollutants that might tarnish your jewellery. For this reason they are also ideal for storage.
- A jewellery travel case or foldable jewellery roll is a great way to organise your pieces when you travel. You can also separate your jewellery into several ziplock bags, or for smaller pieces like stud earrings, use a pill box or a small tin.
- To stop necklaces tangling together, you can also put each necklace chain through a straw.
- If you are flying, keep your most valuable jewellery in your carry-on – unfortunately, it’s not unheard of for people to become separated from their checked luggage, so it’s easier to keep your favourite pieces with you on the plane.
- If you are travelling internationally with valuable jewellery, bear in mind that you may have to declare it at customs. Be aware of the rules in the country you’re going to, and bring copies of receipts that show the items’ value if you can.

Top tips for travelling with an engagement ring
- If you’re planning to propose on your holiday and you don’t want your partner to know about the ring, there are a few crafty places to hide it where they will be unlikely to see. You could put the engagement ring box in a pair of socks. Or, if the ring comes in a soft jewellery bag, you could put this in your sunglasses case.
- If you are too worried to take the real ring with you, some people choose to take a cheaper ring with them on holiday to use for the proposal, and present their partner with the real engagement ring once they get home – or choose an engagement ring together.
- If you are hiding an engagement ring in your carry-on luggage, try to choose a different security queue to your partner at the airport in case you are asked to unpack your bag. You can also attach a note that says ‘engagement ring, please be discreet’ to the outside of the ring box. Remember to include a translation in the languages of the country you’re visiting.
