Old video games

With the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2, many gamers are clearing space for new titles, but new research reveals they may be sitting on a fortune.

Gaming and tech retailer Currys has analysed retro game resale data on PriceCharting, uncovering that some old PAL-region titles now fetch eye-watering prices, even without being factory sealed, meaning there could be an untapped gaming goldmine hiding in UK homes.

Topping the list of the most valuable PAL games was a graded copy of Streets of Rage on the Sega Mega Drive which, based on recent sales, is worth nearly £40,000. Of course, sealed and graded titles top the list of being the most valuable, but even loose cartridges and complete in-box editions that could be sitting in attics and car boots, are selling for large amounts.

A complete in-box edition of Zelda: Majora’s Mask [Adventure Set] for the Nintendo 64 is now worth up to £3,715.01, while Snowboard Challenge (NES) and Mega Man X3 (Super Nintendo) in similar condition can sell for £2,935.80 and £2,465.32, respectively.

But those that missed the boat with these retro titles (Dark Souls III on PS4 aside) should make sure they hold on to future classics and know what to look for.

Roy Raftery, a trading card and video game specialist working with Currys, shared which game he believes could be worth keeping hold of as it is likely to become more valuable. He said: “While not cheap at £65, Super Mario 3D All-Stars for the Nintendo Switch is an interesting choice. It’s a game that collects three iconic Mario titles – so it’s already off to a good start – but was on a timed release by Nintendo, meaning after a certain point they stopped making or selling copies. The only way to pick this title up now is via the second-hand market, and the Switch is a system gamers love collecting for.”

He added: “Trends in pop culture also greatly dictate the price of something. 2025 is the 40th anniversary of Mario and this allowed auction houses and businesses to promote the brand and push it in front of collectors. It’s very much a case of out of sight out of mind for some franchises or titles; the more it’s in the public eye, the more natural attention it commands.”

In fact, there is already a brand-new sealed version of Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Nintendo Switch, 2020) going for £5,086.71 on eBay.

What makes these games so valuable?

The collector’s market is booming thanks to nostalgia, with an aging millennial audience now willing to invest in the titles they grew up playing. Roy says: “What I’ve categorically noticed over the years is how nostalgia and core memories factor hugely into someone’s collecting habits. When I meet people in their late 20’s, they want to buy Xbox or PlayStation 2 games they had as a kid or played with their older brother – not go back and collect Sega Mega Drive or PS1 games.”

In fact, according to Currys’ analysis, Xbox games have seen the greatest increase in value, rising 128% in the past five years, and while the worth still isn’t high, this growth can be attributed to the demand from Millennials that Roy touched on.
