Shoe-Cleaning Hacks on TikTok: What Experts Say Actually Works

From dishwasher cycles to banana peels, social media is full of viral shoe-cleaning hacks – but experts warn that some could be doing more harm than good.

With search interest for “how to clean shoes that smell” up 160% in the past year and TikTok’s #shoecleaning racking up over 474 million views, more people than ever are turning to DIY fixes to keep their favourite footwear fresh. However, with so many different tips circulating online, it can be hard to know which ones are worth trying.

To help separate fact from fiction, footwear experts at OFFICE have reviewed the most popular shoe-cleaning trends across social media, highlighting which ones could work and which are best left on your For You page.

  1. The ‘hack’: Shining shoes with banana peels

Is potassium the secret ingredient to shiny shoes? Experts say no – using a banana peel to shine shoes more often leads to a sticky mess rather than a polished finish. Experts explain banana peels can leave unsightly streaks and stains, especially on leather, and are simply unhygienic. Stick to traditional polish!

The verdict: Best avoided

  1. The ‘hack’: Cleaning shoes in the dishwasher

One TikTok hack shows users placing dirty trainers in the dishwasher, resulting in sparkly clean shoes. However, experts raise concerns about hygiene and potential damage to both the shoes and the dishwasher. The high temperatures, steam, and detergents can weaken glue, warp soles, and damage materials. There’s also a risk of cross-contamination with kitchenware.

The verdict: Not recommended

  1. The ‘hack’: Buffing suede with a nail file

Some social media users suggest using a nail file to remove stains and refresh suede shoes, like UGGs. While there is some logic behind this – gentle buffing can lift discolouration – experts warn that a nail file is usually far too abrasive for delicate suede and could cause damage. Stick to a suede brush or product explicitly designed for your footwear.

The verdict: Use a proper suede tool instead.

  1. The ‘hack’: Using potatoes to clean shoes

A surprising hack circulating on TikTok suggests rubbing a raw potato over shoes to remove dirt and grime. While there’s no strong evidence to back this up, experts caution that the starchy residue left behind could actually cause further staining or discolouration.

The verdict: Unproven and not recommended.

  1. The ‘hack’: Putting Magic Erasers in the washing machine

Melamine sponges – or Magic Erasers – are the source of another viral shoe-cleaning hack, with users adding them to washing machines when washing trainers to enhance whiteness. Experts caution these sponges are too abrasive for footwear and could break apart in the wash, damaging the machine or causing build-up inside the drum.

The verdict: Ineffective and potentially damaging.

  1. The ‘hack’: Deodorising shoes with black tea bags

Another viral TikTok trick suggests placing (unused!) black tea bags inside shoes overnight to absorb moisture and eliminate odours. While this is a harmless, short-term option, it’s unlikely to provide long-lasting freshness. For more effective results, experts recommend using dedicated shoe deodorisers or moisture-absorbing insoles.

The verdict: Harmless, but limited results.

“We’re all for keeping your shoes looking fresh, but you need to clean them properly,” says a spokesperson at OFFICE. “Some of these viral hacks might seem harmless or even clever, but many can cause real damage in the long run. A few simple steps with the right shoe cleaning products will go much further than a dishwasher cycle or old banana peel ever could!”
