Using Your Teeth to Open Bottles

Opening bottles with your teeth may seem like a quick party trick, but it can lead to long-lasting damage and costly dental treatments, warns Nina Gonzero, a leading oral specialist and dentist from Avangart Dental Clinic.

This alarming trend, often seen at social gatherings, can result in cracked teeth, damaged enamel, and even jaw injuries. While it might seem harmless in the moment, the risks far outweigh the convenience.

“Your teeth are not tools,” says Dr. Gonzero. “Using them to open bottles or packages can cause serious injuries, including fractures and chips. Unlike bones, once your enamel is damaged, it cannot regenerate. What may seem like a cool party trick could cost you hundreds or even thousands in dental repairs.”

The Risks of Using Your Teeth as Tools: Dr. Gonzero outlines the most common dangers:

Cracked or Chipped Teeth: The pressure required to pop a bottle cap can easily fracture your teeth.

Damaged Enamel: Once the enamel is worn or cracked, teeth become more vulnerable to decay and sensitivity.

Gum Injuries: Glass or sharp objects can cause lacerations to the gums and soft tissues in the mouth.

Jaw Strain: Repeatedly using your jaw in unnatural ways can lead to strain or even dislocation.

Safe Alternatives and Tips

Dr. Gonzero encourages people to use proper tools like bottle openers or scissors for opening items. She also advises carrying a small multi-tool or keychain opener to avoid temptation.

“If you’ve already injured your teeth while trying to open a bottle, it’s important to seek professional help immediately. Ignoring the damage could lead to further complications, such as infections or tooth loss,” she adds.
