With the ski season in full swing, thrill-seekers are gearing up for days of glistening slopes and exhilarating descents. While fresh snowfall is a must for any ski holiday, many skiers dream of experiencing the magic of a bluebird day, a perfect combination of clear blue skies, sunshine and fresh powder following a storm. 

To help skiers find these ideal conditions, ski tour operator Ski Solutions has conducted research to reveal the best destinations and weeks for bluebird powder days across Europe and North America.

Analysing ski conditions from the last 17 years, the research found the optimal bluebird weeks for 158 ski resorts, where skiers are most likely to have a high number of these dream conditions in the week. 

  1. Third week of January – 47 resorts  
  2. Second week of January – 36 resorts 
  3. Second week of February – 29 resorts 
  4. Fourth week of January – 17 resorts 
  5. First week of January – 8 resorts 

The research revealed that January is the prime month for bluebird skiing conditions, with over 100 resorts experiencing the best chance of bluebird skiing conditions in the first month of the year. 

The third week of January is the most popular time, with nearly a third (32%) of resorts seeing their peak bluebird days during this week, offering skiers ideal conditions with clear blue skies and fresh powder. 

The second week of January follows closely, with 23% of resorts experiencing their best bluebird days, making the month a reliable choice for winter sports enthusiasts. The fourth week of January also ranks high, with 11% of resorts reaching their bluebird peak. 

Popular destinations such as French resort Tignes, a high-altitude resort with consistent snow reliability, see some of the best bluebird days during January with an average of 3.5 bluebird days.

There is no surprise that January remains a top choice for skiers, offering a great start to the year with strong snow and exceptional bluebird skiing conditions.

Ski Solutions’ booking data found that January 2025 is already shaping up to be a popular month, with Val d’Isere, Courmayeur and Les Arcs leading as the most booked resorts. St. Anton has also entered the top five this year, replacing Cervinia from 2024.  

Amongst the most popular departure dates for January 2025 are Saturday 4th, 18th and 25th, aligning with the demand for the third week of January as a prime time for bluebird skiing.
