Edd “Sparkles” Stanton: The YouTube Star Who Built a Career Out of Creativity, Gaming, and Giving Back

Share

From viral montages to building one of YouTube’s most dedicated communities, Edd Stanton, or Sparkles as he’s known online, shares the journey behind his career and what keeps him going.

Q: Edd, let’s go back to the beginning. How did this whole journey start? Did you know you’d eventually make it as big as you have?

Sparkles: Oh, not at all! It was 2009, and I was just a gamer really into editing. I’d watch these cool montages, and I wanted to make my own. I spent hours learning the editing tricks I needed and eventually started my own team, Sparkles Productions. One of our first big hits, “Can’t Be Touched by Sorry,” took off with 1.5 million views. It was amazing back then, especially for a bunch of people just doing it for the love of gaming and editing. There was no money or fame, just passion. That’s what really kept me going.

Q: It sounds like a perfect mix of talent and timing. How did Counter-Strike: Global Offensive factor into your growth?

Sparkles: Counter-Strike came along right as the montage scene was starting to fade. I almost quit, to be honest. But then I saw how creative Counter-Strike: Global Offensive could be, so I started making these mini-montages of gameplay, focusing on “ninja defuses”—sneaking past opponents and defusing bombs right under their noses. It’s kind of tense and a little funny, so people loved it. I decided to post every day for a month, just to see if it’d work, and it did! My channel took off, and I realized I could really make a career out of this.

Q: And now you’ve got over 600 million views. That’s huge. What do you think drew so many people in?

Sparkles: I think it’s a mix of consistency and putting my own twist on things. I pushed myself to upload daily, and I put a lot of care into each video—syncing the edits to music I liked, finding the perfect shots. I wanted my videos to feel different. I’ve also been lucky to collaborate with some big names in gaming, like FaZe Clan, fnatic, and even companies like Logitech. One of my favorite moments was in 2016 when I unboxed a super rare Souvenir Dragon Lore skin in a video. It’s still one of my most popular videos, with over 3 million views.

Q: With a game that’s been around for so long, where do you find new ideas?

Sparkles: That’s the tricky part, but Counter-Strike has this whole “skin economy” where players can buy, trade, and collect in-game skins. It’s surprisingly deep, and there’s so much you can do with it. I like setting challenges for myself and bringing my audience along for the ride. Valve, the game developer, keeps things interesting by adding new collections, so there’s always something to explore.

Q: Your audience is so loyal and engaged. How do you keep that connection strong?

Sparkles: I think of them constantly when I’m creating content. If something excites me, like going after a rare item, I know my audience will love it too. I try to give back a lot, too, whether it’s free skins in the comments or a series where fans send me skins, and I add value to get them something better. I’ve even gifted friends with their dream cars and surprised streamers with random donations. For me, it’s about sharing what I have because they’ve helped me build this career. It only feels right to give back.

Q: You’ve seen so many changes in gaming since you started. What stands out to you?

Sparkles: The scale of it all. Back when I was a teenager, gaming was looked down on—it was seen as unproductive. Now, we have massive arenas filled with fans, and gaming figures are as well-known as traditional celebrities. People have finally recognized the gaming world as legitimate, which is exciting to see. This whole community I’ve grown up with has become a mainstream part of society.

Q: What’s been the biggest challenge for you over these years?

Sparkles: Keeping up with what people want. YouTube and gaming are fast-moving, so I’ve had to shift gears more than once. When montages lost popularity, I had to move toward skins and building more of a personal brand. It was a risk, but it worked out. I’d tell new creators not to be afraid to try something new and to keep an eye on what their audience responds to. Sometimes, taking that risk can change everything.

Q: Do you think online content is changing the entertainment industry?

Sparkles: Absolutely. Digital media is more accessible, and creators can be genuine in a way that traditional media often isn’t. People trust independent voices on YouTube. It’s become this space where you don’t have to follow a script or cater to big sponsors. And I think that’s powerful. You’re even seeing politicians work with big influencers now because they realize the influence digital creators have.

Q: Outside of gaming, what else are you passionate about?

Sparkles: I’ve got a big soft spot for cats. Every summer, I take in orphaned kittens that show up in my garden and find them homes, sometimes with viewers. I also recently donated 10,000 euros to a local shelter. I love cars, too, and spend a lot of time in the gym. Music is another passion—I’m a big fan of electronic music and go to festivals with DJ friends. There’s always something I’m up to when I’m not gaming.

Q: So, what’s next for Sparkles?

Sparkles: I’ve got a few exciting things lined up. I’m working with DJ Atmozfears to make some music kits for Counter-Strike, which fans can vote on. If they love it, it could end up in the game! And I’m also planning an editing competition with a $50,000 prize pool. It’s a nod to my early montage days, so it feels like a nice full-circle moment. I can’t wait to see what people come up with.
