5 Things which are damaging your garden furniture

Wooden furniture turns out to be the most long-lasting if you go by average manufacture warranties and guarantees, but most other materials should last 3-5 years.

However, there are everyday items and activities which can harm the finishes and make them fade and fail faster.

To help, Harrod Horticultural have gathered the following 5 things you should watch out for and avoid to get your money’s worth out of your garden furniture:

  1. Acid-based cleaners and foods: Acidic materials like cleaning fluids or even citrus juice may dissolve any zinc coatings and cause steel to rust or affect the colour and longevity of the material.
  2. Colour-rich and staining foods: Think beetroot, coffee, berries or fruits and oils, these are all likely to stain your wood or paint if not immediately wiped up. For safety, use a tablecloth as a barrier.
  3. Pressure washers: While they’re usually excellent at cleaning stains and long-term muck, too-strong pressure can be overly abrasive and damaging to the finish of your furniture.
  4. UV rays and weather: The sun is one of the biggest culprits for damaging your furniture as UV rays can break down materials and paint. Similarly, with other inclement weather, constant exposure can mar the finish. Best practise is to get a cover and use it.
  5. Be aware of salt: Environments nearby the sea have salt-rich atmospheres which can accelerate corrosion in metals, so keep an eye out and wash your furniture with fresh water, often.

Harrod Horticultural say, “A lot of things play into how each manufacturer sets their guarantees but avoiding these five things and regularly cleaning your outdoor furniture with simple washing-up liquid and warm water, and maintaining it with covers and tablecloths, can help your pieces last as long as possible.”

The above tips and information was compiled by Harrod Horticultural, a UK garden furniture, tools and equipment manufacturer and supplier with more 70 years’ experience in the industry. They are dedicated to innovation, quality and customer satisfaction with a ‘Whatever it takes’ approach.
