Build Your Own Pizza Oven And Other Garden DIY Projects

To make the most of the lighter evenings, Brits are eager to find creative ways of revamping their outdoor space.

The arrival of warmer weather has triggered an interest in garden hacks, with the hashtag #gardenprojects receiving 510,000 posts on TikTok. 

To help homeowners get their garden summer ready, Paul McFadyen, Chairman of leading online metal supplier metals4U, has revealed how to build the top four trending garden items whose Google searches have soared over the last 90 days. 

1.     How to build a compost heap (up 3,450%) 

It’s no surprise that searches to build a compost heap are up a whopping 3,450%, with many gardening enthusiasts supporting sustainable agriculture.  Whilst building a compost heap is not particularly challenging, make sure the chosen area is partially shaded, has a clear area with soil on the ground, and that it is easily accessible. 

To create the structure use three pallets on their sides (try Facebook marketplace or other local groups) to create the back and side edges. Push stakes through the pallets into the ground to secure the structure. Rebar is well suited to this as it is strong and durable. 

Once complete, you can use another pallet or another bit of wood to create a gate to allow easy access into the compost heap. To ensure nothing spills out and to prevent rodent invasion, you can add some chicken wire within the structure and across the top. 

2.     How to build a trampoline (up 2,650%) 

With the summer holidays just around the corner, many families will be looking to bring a fun activity to their back garden. When constructing a trampoline in your garden the main concern is safety as it will be mostly young children using it. Ensure there is a sturdy level surface to provide stability and that the area is clear of hazards with sufficient space around. It is also essential that your trampoline meets the UK safety standard.  From a practical point of view, check that it fits the garden space before purchasing. 

Assemble the trampoline as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Once set up it is advised that an adult tests the trampoline to ensure it doesn’t wobble, and that the jumping mat has the correct tension. 

Some trampolines come with a net to fit around the outside, but depending on the height, you might also want to install a ladder for easy access or rubber mats for protection. In terms of maintenance, check for signs of wear and tear, especially in the metal springs and mat. Clear away any debris and cover the trampoline when not in use to keep it in prime condition. 

3.     How to build decking on a slope (up 950%) 

Decking is a great way to create a beautiful entertainment area in your garden, but building on a slope can be a slight challenge!  The very first step before you get started is to check building regulations in your area for decking construction – as you may need planning permission depending on the size. 

After making sure you are within your local area regulations, measure the slope to determine the height difference between the ends. Make sure the area is clear of rocks and vegetation to prepare the site, and then you can then use string to mark out the perimeter of the decking. As the area is sloped, you will need to dig very deep footing holes on one side to ensure the decking is level and secure. 

Place a decking post in the holes and allow an extra foot in height – this will get cut off eventually. Concrete the holes in and leave to dry for 48 hours, but make sure the posts are level by using a spirit level. If your decking is joined on to your house or another structure you will need to instal ledger boards to the frame to securely attach it to the house to help distribute the weight and support the decking. Frame the deck by connecting the deck beams and attach the floor beams. 

For the finishing touch, add railings if these are needed to conform to safety regulations. From a safety angle ensure all components are securely fastened and regularly check for any essential maintenance.  

4.     How to build a pizza oven (up 800%) 

While BBQs have always been popular in the summer season, many people are looking for a new way of cooking in the outdoors – the pizza oven. When building a pizza oven, the main factor to consider is ensuring that it is away from anything flammable. Choose an area that is flat and stable and gets good sunlight. Once you’ve decided on a stable location lay cement to create a solid foundation. The next step is to the build the structure, which consists of a base and the oven dome.  

To start make sure you use clay bricks to create a sturdy base for your oven, adding 3 –4 layers with a thin lay of concrete between them until the oven reaches a good height. Add firebricks to create the oven floor as they will be able to withstand scorching temperatures. When following the traditional dome structure, continue to build the clay bricks into a front arch and leave an entryway to the oven, ensuring it is big enough for a medium sized pizza to fit in.  

To properly vent out the smoke, add a stainless steel or clay chimney into the roof. You can also add a layer of insulation to the dome such as clay or finishing touches such as a striking shelter over the oven. Upon completion the oven needs to dry out completely over a week or so to prevent any cracking. We also recommend starting out with small fires to test out your oven before showcasing it at the next garden party.
