After one of the driest springs on record, the UK is bracing for a shift in weather.

High-pressure systems have been causing prolonged dry spells. However, forecasts indicate that unsettled weather, including rain and cooler temperatures, are expected to return by late May or early June.

Spring 2025 has been exceptionally dry, with the UK recording only 80.6mm of rainfall so far, making it potentially the driest spring in over a century. And while many Brits are enjoying the sunshine, those with gardens are being warned that this dry spell could lead to costly problems down the line.

Bill Jarvis, wood paint specialist at Premium Paints, says: “Unfortunately, dry spells can cause wooden garden structures to crack, and when the rain returns, these cracks let moisture in, creating the perfect environment for mould, algae  and rot.”

And the price of ignoring it isn’t cheap; fence repairs can cost up to £1839, according to Checkatrade, with full replacements running even higher. Now is the time to act, before the rain comes in and makes things worse.

Here’s how to properly protect your fence and other wooden garden structures ahead of the wetter weather:

  • Inspect for damage – look for signs of wear, including cracks, warping or splintering. Look closely at the base of the fence panels where moisture tends to build up and where damage could get missed
  • Clean the fence thoroughly – use a stiff brush to remove dirt or flaking paint, or a pressure washer for stubborn spots. This will help the paint adhere properly and prevent you from sealing in any mould spores
  • Let it dry fully – this is so important because the paint won’t stick properly if it’s damp, and you’ll risk making the issue worse by trapping moisture inside
  • Use weather-resistant wood paint – choose a high-quality exterior paint designed to protect against moisture, UV rays and fungal growth. This will create a barrier and stop moisture from seeping through gaps when rain arrives
  • Apply evenly in dry and mild conditions – avoid painting in the midday sun or on highly humid days. Late springs, moderate temperatures and dry spells make the ideal time to get it done

“A fence might not seem urgent until it starts to rot, but by then, it’s often too late,” says Bill. “A quick paint job now is a simple way to avoid a costly problem later on.”

Extra tips for long-term protection

  • Apply a wood preservative first for extra protection, especially if your fence hasn’t been treated in a few years
  • Trim back any overhanging plants as they can trap moisture and stop panels from drying properly
  • Keep soil levels down, soil touching the bottom of the fence panels speeds up rot, so try and keep it a few centimetres below the wood
