The Algarve in southern Portugal is an idyllic destination to swap the chaos for calm with plenty of ways to unwind. Experience an alternative side to the bustling Algarve, a region full of history and beauty, with a trip that priorities rejuvenation and wellness…
Experience true relaxation in the Algarve:
1. Cruising around Ria Formosa National Park is the perfect way to switch off and unwind as you admire the breath-taking nature that surrounds you. This maze of canals, islands, marshes, and barrier islands, stretching 60kms along the Algarve coast is also a beautiful spot for bird watching. For an uninterrupted guide of the nature park, visitors can opt for either a private or group catamaran cruise which will take them around the estuary, seeing beautiful desert beaches and the best hidden spots.
Speed boat tour / Duration: 1 to 2 hours / Capacity: up to 7 people / Ages: All ages / Optional private hire available too. Prices start from €25/£22 per person, visit: https://www.iseacharter.com/boat-tours/speed-boat-tour/
2. Rest and reflect with some of the best sunrises and sunsets. The beautiful coastline of the Algarve offers stunning spots to experience sunrise and sunset, peace and tranquility are an absolute given.

Top locations for sunrise:
Praia dos Tres Irmaos, adorned with spectacular rock formations and caves.
Ponta Da Piedade, a breath-taking stretch of golden sand and clear water.
Praia do Camilo, truly picture-perfect.
Top locations for sunset:
Ponta do Cabo de São Vicente, also known as “the end of the world”, as it was from this place that caravels went out to discover, at the time of the “Descobrimentos”.
Ria Formosa, becomes a stage for many birds during sunset, as it is the time when many of them go for the last food of the day.
Pico Alto is located in São Bartolomeu de Messines, a great alternative for those looking to experience sunset away from the beach.
3. The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is considered as one of the most beautiful hikes in Europe and has long been the most famous and popular of the Algarve hikes, encompassing some of the region’s most stunning scenery. The trail passes through limestone cliffs, offers spectacular sea views, and leads walkers to hidden beaches and natural arches. This 5.7-kilometer route connects Praia da Marinha to Praia de Vale Centeanes. Although you can begin from either end, it’s more common to start at Praia da Marinha and head west. Outdoor exercise can be one of the best ways to relax and rebalance.
Duration: This hike takes an average of 3hours and 30minutes to complete / Challenge Level: Generally considered a moderately challenging route, ideal for spending time outdoors and enjoying the wonderful views.
- Escape reality for a while as you get creative at Loulé Creativo in Loulé, a new initiative that offers creative workshops, courses, themed weekends and experiences inspired by art, craftsmanship, gastronomy and heritage. Tapestry workshops, painting classes and cookery sessions are just some examples of the activities visitors can partake in. It is certainly an alternative way to experience the history and culture of the Algarve.
Prices vary per workshop. For more information visit: www.loulecriativo.pt/pt/turismocriativo/experiencias
- Enjoy the peaceful ambience of Estamine on Deserta Island, part of the Ria Formosa natural lagoon which includes a series of barrier islands just off the coast. Deserta Island and its beach can be reached by a small ferry from Faro or Olhão (takes about 30 mins). On Deserta you can enjoy sunbathing and swimming and a particular bonus is the only restaurant on the island Estamine restaurant, which serves up fresh fish and seafood, among other genuinely Algarvian specialties from its solar powered kitchen. The sandy island is around 7km (5 miles) long and only 600 metres wide at its widest point. The best location for a slow-pace day.
