Essential Gardening Tips for Early to Mid-November

As temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, early to mid-November is a key period in a gardener’s calendar. It’s the perfect time to prepare your garden for the colder months ahead, while also setting yourself up for a vibrant display come spring.

To help your garden stay healthy year-round, Paul Parker, gardening expert at plant and bulb specialists J. Parker’s, shares his top gardening jobs to tackle this November.

🌷 Plant Spring Bulbs

“Early November is an ideal time to plant your spring bulbs,” says Paul. “Think about where you’re placing them to create a stunning display once the weather begins to warm again.”

He recommends experimenting with different heights and textures:

“Tulips, daffodils and alliums make great taller-flowering varieties, while Fritillaria, miniature narcissi and crocuses add lower-growing colour and contrast.”

For the best visual impact:

  • Plant smaller flowers at the front of borders and taller varieties at the back.
  • In pots, position taller bulbs in the centre and smaller ones around the edges to achieve balance and depth.

🍂 Make the Most of Fallen Leaves

“As autumn leaves begin to fall, one of the main jobs is to keep the garden tidy,” says Paul. “Not only does this keep your garden looking neat, but dead leaves make great compost.”

Add fallen leaves to your compost heap along with nitrogen-rich grass clippings from summer. Keep the pile moist (but not wet) and well aerated.

“In a year or two, you’ll have rich compost that can be used to add vital nutrients back into your soil,” Paul explains.

🌹 Prune Climbing Roses

“Climbing roses can be pruned in late autumn or winter, once the plant is dormant,” Paul advises.
However, if your rose is less than two years old, avoid pruning altogether to prevent stunting its growth.

“Focus on removing side shoots that cross or stick out, and cut just above a bud,” he says. “Avoid cutting into the main framework of stems — gentle shaping is all that’s needed.”

🌿 Lift Tender Plants

By November, the first frosts are often just around the corner, so it’s important to lift tender bulbs and tubers now to protect them from damage.

“Lift bulbs and tubers and store them in a dry, frost-free place until spring,” Paul recommends. “This ensures you can replant them next year and enjoy repeat blooms.”

This simple step helps you maximise your investment and keep your garden thriving year after year.

🌳 Move Rooted Plants

As trees, shrubs and climbers begin to defoliate in mid-November, they enter their dormant phase — the perfect time to move them to a new spot in your garden.

“Once they’re fully dormant, usually by mid-November, it’s much easier for roots to establish in a new position,” Paul says. “Wait for the leaves to drop completely before lifting and replanting.”

With a little planning and preparation this month, your garden can rest easy through winter and burst back to life in spring — stronger and more vibrant than ever.
