The 5-Minute Mirror Test: How to Tell If You’re Going Bald

Share

With hair transplants and restoration treatments booming across the UK, leading hair transplant surgeon Dr. Emrah Cinik has revealed a quick “five-minute mirror test” anyone can do at home to spot the first signs of hair loss, before it’s too late.

Hair loss rarely happens overnight. It’s a gradual process that can take years before it becomes noticeable.

According to world-renowned hair transplant surgeon Dr. Emrah Cinik, most men could have caught the warning signs far earlier.

“By the time hair loss is visible, almost half of the follicles in that area may already be inactive,” he explains. “Catching it early gives you the best chance of keeping your hair and slowing further loss.”

Here’s his simple five-step test you can do at home: no clinic visit, no special equipment, just a mirror and good lighting.

1. Check the Corners of Your Temples

Stand facing the mirror and gently push your hair back with your fingers. Are the corners above your temples starting to form a subtle “M” shape?

“Recession almost always begins around the temples,” says Dr Cinik. “If the hairline has crept back a few millimetres on the sides but not in the middle, that’s an early sign of male pattern baldness.”

Uneven thinning on one side is another red flag.

2. Compare to an Old Photo

Grab a photo from a few years ago and compare it under similar lighting.

“Most people forget how low their natural hairline once sat,” says Dr Cinik. “If your forehead looks taller or the hairline less defined, that’s clear evidence of movement.”

3. Use Bright Light to Check Density

Step under a bright bathroom light or stand near a sunny window.

“Early thinning often starts before the hairline recedes,” Dr Cinik explains. “If you can see more scalp at the crown or front, or the texture feels ‘flatter’, your density is changing.”

4. Measure and Mark

Take a soft tape measure and check the distance between your eyebrows and hairline at the centre and temples.

“The average male hairline sits about 6.5 to 7.5 centimetres above the brows,” says Dr Cinik. “If it’s crept up by more than a centimetre since your last check, it’s likely progressing.”

5. Look for Finer, Baby-Like Hairs

Lean close to the mirror and inspect the front edge. “Those fine, soft hairs are called ‘miniaturised’ follicles,” explains Dr Cinik. “They’re still alive, but shrinking. If untreated, they’ll eventually stop growing altogether.”

“Hair loss is a slow, gradual process that begins long before it’s visible. By the time most men notice a change, many follicles in that area are already dormant. That’s why early detection is vital.

A quick mirror test every few months can make all the difference. Look carefully under strong lighting: the temples and crown are the usual starting points. Comparing current photos with older ones in similar conditions can reveal subtle shifts in your hairline or overall thickness.

Also pay attention to texture. If the front feels finer or softer than before, it’s a classic early sign of miniaturisation. At this stage, non-surgical treatments such as minoxidil, PRP therapy, or laser therapy can help maintain natural density.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is men assuming early thinning is ‘just ageing’. That delay often means losing the window where simple treatments can preserve what’s left. Think of it like dental care. The earlier you check, the less intervention you’ll need later.

The five-minute mirror test is not about panic; it’s about awareness. The sooner you act, the greater your chance of keeping your hair strong, healthy, and yours,” says Hair Transplant Expert Dr. Emrah Cinik.
