Scrambled Eggs on Sourdough Named Britain’s Favourite Breakfast – But Are You Making Them Right?

Share

All hail the SCRAMBLED egg, which has been voted King of the British breakfast table, by a resounding 54 percent of the nation.

The folded favourite, also beat off stiff competition from trendy breakfasts such as smashed avocado and breakfast burritos, which modern Brits cited as other top choices.

And it seems Brits are making healthier choices in general for their breakfasts, with 38 percent saying fried bread is unhealthy and outdated.

Bowls of sugar laden cereals, including Coco Pops (35 percent) and Frosted Cornflakes (32 percent) are also off the breakfast table for young Brits, with 31 percent saying they wouldn’t eat black pudding or chocolate spread.

Even sausages (21 percent), marmalade (20 percent) and tea with milk and sugar (19 percent) are falling out of favour, according to the trends report.

Alf (48 percent) of those surveyed by British Lion Eggs consider sugary cereals to be unhealthy, with a further 47 percent saying they’re choosing healthier breakfast foods (58 percent) and 18 percent are eating less ultra processed foods.

Yet, the scrambled egg remains ever popular with all generations of Brits who prefer it on sourdough rather than plain toast, according to the data.

But are you scrambling your eggs correctly? Michelin star chef Sally Abe, who has worked with British Lion Eggs, gives the secret, “To end up with silky pillows of scrambled eggs, patience is key.

“Crack two eggs per person into a small bowl and whisk until the yolks and whites are fully mixed together. Season with salt and pepper.

“Then, heat a knob of butter over a gentle heat in a small non-stick pan until it starts to bubble but not brown, and add the eggs.

“Stir with a spatula then leave for 10-15 seconds to let the eggs start to firm from the heat. Continue to stir gently until you get nice pillows of egg.

“Remove from the heat when the eggs are three quarters cooked and give one final stir before quickly removing from the pan, as they will continue cooking. If you are feeling fancy, stir in a spoonful of crème fraíche before removing from the pan.”

Eggs are a favourite due to being a naturally nutritious food. Four in ten (40 percent) of those surveyed agree that there is a current movement towards whole and natural foods.

Two thirds (65 percent) go a step further and admit they are more concerned about processed food now than three years ago, leading to 66 percent cutting the amount in their diet.

A spokesperson from British Lion Eggs said: “It’s clear that younger Brits have good intentions when it comes to what they eat for breakfast. They are increasingly opting for naturally nutritious foods to start the day. Breakfast trends come and go, but eggs remain at the top of the menu, and they are now being enjoyed alongside other healthier options as well as being recognised as an unbeatable nutrient-packed choice. “
