How to Outsmart Summer Burglars – Expert Security Tips Inside!
As the warmer months approach, many homeowners find themselves eagerly anticipating summer’s arrival, with longer days and outdoor gatherings. However, this season also brings an increase in burglaries, as opportunistic criminals take advantage of the more relaxed atmosphere. With windows left open and doors ajar, properties become easier targets for those with ill intentions.
Mark Hodgson, Chairman of Tremark – a company specialising in data security and privacy consultancy – and Vice President of The Association of British Investigators, offers his advice to homeowners on how they can take proactive measures to safeguard their belongings and create a secure environment.
“With years of experience as a private investigator and security expert, I have encountered a wide array of methods and strategies that homeowners can implement to enhance their security and protect their properties from burglars. I’ve observed both the tactics used by criminals and the measures that proved effective in thwarting them!
“One effective approach is marking valuables with UV light. This technique not only makes it easier to identify stolen items, but also signals to potential thieves that the property is traceable, serving as a strong deterrent. Items such as electronics, tools and expensive garden equipment should be labelled accordingly.
“When it comes to securing entry points, reinforcing windows and doors is crucial. Homeowners should invest in high-security door locks and consider installing deadbolts; upgrading window locks should not be neglected, as many burglars gain entry this way.
“You might also consider applying security film to windows which can make them shatter-resistant, adding an extra layer of protection against break-ins.

“In the garden, safeguarding tools and equipment by storing them in a locked shed or garage is essential. A gravel pathway can deter intruders, as the sound of footsteps crunching on gravel may alert homeowners to their presence. Planting thorny bushes near your fences can also act as a natural barrier, making it more difficult for burglars to gain access.
“Smart security devices, such as cameras and alarms, have become increasingly popular for home protection, and I think they serve as a deterrent. However, it’s vital for homeowners to be aware of, and ensure compliance with, privacy laws when using these devices. This includes informing visitors of any active surveillance and positioning cameras to avoid capturing any footage of public areas.
“To prevent ‘distraction burglaries’, homeowners should remain vigilant about unexpected visitors, particularly those claiming to represent utility companies or other services. It’s essential to verify their identity before granting access to the property: any genuine worker should be happy to provide you with their credentials and wait for you to verify them. Installing a peephole or using a doorbell camera can help you assess who is at the door without opening it, providing an added layer of security.
“Beyond the conventional advice, there are also some offbeat strategies that can be surprisingly effective. For instance, consider adopting a “guard dog” that isn’t a dog at all: placing a large, realistic-looking statue of a dog in your front yard can give the impression that you have a fierce pet watching over your property.
“Additionally, using motion-activated sound devices that play recordings – perhaps barking dogs or the voice of an angry homeowner – can create an unsettling atmosphere for potential intruders.
“Another quirky tip is to keep an old pair of shoes or a jacket hanging by your front door to create the illusion that someone is home. This simple trick can dissuade burglars who may be watching your property.
“Lastly, consider using “decoy” security cameras that look genuine but aren’t actually operational. Just the sight of a camera can be enough to make a potential thief think twice.
“While no trick is fool proof, combining these traditional and unconventional strategies can help homeowners significantly reduce their risk of burglary and help create a safer living environment.”
While the summer months are often full of joy and freedom, it’s important not to get complacent with awareness of home security. Taking preventative steps allows homeowners to enjoy the season with confidence, knowing they have fortified their homes against potential threats.
