The Lansdowne Club Marks 90 Years of Prestige, Inclusivity and Legacy in Mayfair

One of London’s most distinguished private members’ clubs, The Lansdowne Club is proud to celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2025 — marking nine decades of heritage, elegance, and inclusivity in the heart of Mayfair.
Founded in 1935, the Club is hosting a year-long calendar of exclusive events and initiatives to honour its rich history and vibrant future. Blending tradition with modernity, The Lansdowne Club remains a refined yet welcoming hub for its diverse membership, set within a stunning 18th-century Grade II listed* building.
A Storied Past
Originally known as Lansdowne House, the building was designed by famed architect Robert Adam for the British Prime Minister, the 3rd Earl of Bute, in 1762. It was later acquired by William Petty Fitzmaurice, 2nd Earl of Shelburne and 1st Marquess of Lansdowne — himself a former Prime Minister (1782–1783). The house has witnessed historic moments, including the drafting of the Treaty of Paris (1783) in what is now The Round Room Bar, and the signing of the Entente Cordiale in 1904.

Notable past residents include retail magnate Gordon Selfridge, who hosted legendary soirées here in the 1920s. Today, the Club continues that spirit of celebration with events that reflect both its glamourous past and forward-looking ethos — even the Club cats, Harry and Rose, are named in tribute to Selfridge and his wife.
In 1935, The Lansdowne Club made history by becoming the first London private members’ club to admit men and women as equals — a tradition of inclusivity that remains central to its identity.
Signature Spaces
The Club boasts unique facilities that include:
- London’s only private club salles d’armes
- A 25-yard original Art Deco swimming pool
- A piano bar featuring an instrument from the RMS Queen Mary

These are just a few examples of how The Lansdowne Club artfully blends old-world charm with modern-day luxury.
A Year of Celebratory Highlights
To mark its 90th year, The Lansdowne Club will host a series of exciting events, including:
- The Lansdowne Literary Festival, featuring CEO David Herbert in conversation with Country Life Editor Mark Hedges
- A Historic Archive Exhibition showcasing rare photographs, artefacts and documents from the Club’s archives
- A 1930s-themed White Tie Ball, complete with a four-course dinner inspired by the decade when the Club first opened
- A Member Appreciation Lunch to honour those who have been with the Club for over 50 years

Looking Ahead
“The Lansdowne Club has always stood for excellence, inclusivity, and the enduring spirit of London,” said David Herbert, CEO and Club Secretary. “Our 90th anniversary is not just a celebration of our past, but a promise for the future — to continue evolving while preserving the elegance and charm that have defined us for generations.”
In line with that vision, the Club is unveiling a thoughtful refurbishment plan, blending timeless architecture with state-of-the-art amenities — ensuring it remains a premier destination for social, cultural, sporting and professional engagement in Mayfair for generations to come.
