The rise of cosmetic procedures among men

Cosmetic treatments like Botox have long been associated with women, but this perception is quickly changing.
An increasing number of men are turning to aesthetic enhancements to tweak their appearance, driven by changing social norms and the influence of male celebrities and influencers.
Dr. Akis Ntonos, founder of Aion Aesthetics and partner at Certainly Heath, sheds light on this growing trend, noting: “Every year, my colleagues and I see more male patients seeking cosmetic procedures.
“This change reflects the evolution of attitudes toward gender roles and a growing comfort with openly discussing and embracing aesthetic treatments.”
Dr. Ntonos shares insights into why men are opting for cosmetic enhancements, the types of procedures they prefer, and advice for those considering taking the leap.
Why are men getting cosmetic treatments?

According to Dr. Ntonos, the increasing number of men pursuing cosmetic enhancements can be attributed to several factors.
“The first reason for this shift is that traditional gender roles and stereotypes have been largely dismantled in the past decade. As a result, men are becoming increasingly open to exploring things that were once considered feminine.
“The rise of male influencers and celebrities sharing their cosmetic enhancements has also had a significant impact.
“Today, people aren’t just undergoing treatments but are openly discussing them on social media, television, and other platforms.
“This transparency has helped destigmatize cosmetic procedures, encouraging more men to consider them.”
What types of treatments are men typically getting?
The types of treatments men are opting for vary, but some have seen notable increases in popularity.
“Botox is one of the procedures with the most significant increase in male patients.
“In 2020, over 265,000 men received Botox injections—a jump of 182,000 from two decades earlier. Data shows that men are now spending over 400% more on Botox compared to the year 2000. This surge has even earned the nickname ‘Bro-tox.’”
Other procedures are also gaining traction among male clients.
“Fillers to enhance the jawline and other facial contours are very popular among men. These treatments can create a more chiselled and youthful appearance.
“Microneedling is another treatment that’s gaining traction among male clients. It improves skin texture, reduces scars, and boosts collagen production.”
