It’s a new year, which means millions of people will be planning to step up their health game – with a recent survey revealing 39 percent of respondents planned health-related resolutions to kick off 2025.

Alongside ramping up a fitness and healthy eating routine, and losing weight, introducing daily vitamins and supplements can be a good way to boost your consumption of essential nutrients and maintain or improve health.

However, taking vitamins and supplements can come with their own health warnings.

Kiran Jones, Clinical Pharmacist at Oxford Online Pharmacy is warning January health kick-ers of potentially dangerous effects of water-soluble vitamins on your bladder control and erectile function.

How can it affect your bladder?

Water-soluble vitamins refer to all except A, D, E and K – mainly B complexes and Vitamin C.

As these are often formulated in high doses, they may cause rapid excretion by the kidneys, which can concentrate in the bladder.

Taking too many at once, or at too high a dose, can irritate in the bladder.

This is particularly true for women taking a high dosage of Vitamin C supplements, with studies revealing storage symptoms, such as urinary urgency and frequency.

Other symptoms may include a burning sensation or severe abdominal discomfort.

Can this lead to erectile dysfunction?

While not intrinsically linked, erectile dysfunction can be a consequence of bladder irritation, according to a study. The relationship between these issues primarily stems from the interconnectedness of the urinary and reproductive systems, as well as the psychological and physiological impacts of bladder irritation.

1.    Disruption to Pelvic Floor Function: Bladder irritation can lead to frequent urination, urgency, or pain, which might overwork or weaken the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles are critical for urinary control and sexual function. Chronic irritation or inflammation in the bladder may lead to dysfunction in these muscles, affecting the ability to maintain an erection.

2.    Nerve Pathway Involvement: Both the bladder and the penis rely on the same network of nerves in the pelvic region. Chronic bladder irritation, such as that caused by excessive vitamin concentrations, might overstimulate or damage these nerves. This can disrupt the signals required for achieving or maintaining an erection.

3.    Circulatory Impact: Persistent bladder irritation and associated discomfort might affect the blood vessels in the pelvic region. Proper blood flow is essential for erectile function, and any constriction or inflammation in these areas could hinder this process.

4.    Psychological Stress: Chronic discomfort from bladder irritation can lead to stress, anxiety, or lowered self-esteem. These psychological factors are well-documented contributors to erectile dysfunction. The frustration of dealing with bladder symptoms may also exacerbate pre-existing sexual health issues.

5.    Hormonal Links: Bladder irritation can disrupt sleep or contribute to chronic pain, both of which may interfere with hormone regulation. Testosterone, vital for libido and erectile function, could be negatively impacted under such conditions.

How to avoid this happening

If you’re suffering bladder irritation following a recent introduction of certain vitamin supplements, you might want to consider reviewing your dosage and combinations.

The recommended daily Vitamin C dosage is 50mg, while each vitamin B complex varies from 1 (vitamin B1) to 16mg (vitamin B3).

Meanwhile, you should take Vitamin C at least two hours after taking a Vitamin B supplement (best taken with a meal).

This will give the bladder a chance to pass the first vitamin to avoid irritation. It will also allow your body to absorb and metabolise vitamin B-12 better.

While bladder irritation does not directly cause erectile dysfunction, the cascade of physical and psychological effects it initiates can increase the likelihood of experiencing issues with sexual function. For individuals facing such symptoms, adjusting vitamin intake and seeking medical advice can help prevent complications and restore overall well-being.
