This Winter, Channel 4 heads to Belfast to shoot its observational film around the city in the run-up to Christmas. Annually, attracting over one million visitors a year these markets are a significant contributor to the local economy and this year is celebrating its 20th birthday!
Channel 4 will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the Belfast Christmas Market showcasing the organisers and vendors who plan year-round to bring the Christmas spirit. Sourcing traders from over 30 countries across the world as well as local suppliers, the documentary looks into the building of 106 chalets, the erection of the Christmas tree and the annual light ceremony that crowds from all over the UK visit Belfast to see.
The markets opened on the 16th November and to celebrate its birthday, are transporting visitors back to the Victorian era with Dickensian-themed Christmas market experience immersing guests into the charm of Dickens’ world accompanied by iconic characters from his stories, enchanting storytelling experiences and live performances aiming to bring his work to life.
Celebrating local suppliers and introducing locals and tourists alike to international cuisine and artwork, the markets will host over 100 traders offering an array of high-quality Christmas fayre, handcrafted products, bespoke artisan crafts as well as providing a festive food court. Guests can sip on a warming mug of Glühwein whilst soaking in the magical atmosphere and letting the little ones meet Santa in his grotto.
Visit Belfast City Hall up until the 22nd December to be a part of the magic in Belfast this Christmas.
The Dickens experience will be available to visitors who visit on the 16th&17th November and the 30th November & 1st December. The Christmas markets open on the 16th November a 12pm with the bars open until 9pm Monday – Wednesday and until 11pm Thursday – Saturday.
