snacks for cyclists

From burritos to protein-packed snacks, this expert’s list will help cyclists pick up the pace without slowing down

Unless you’re an expert juggler, stopping for a full meal when you’re cycling isn’t always an option. Keeping your energy levels up is integral to maintaining pace and stamina, so what are the best one-handed snacks that you can munch on while you ride?

“The key is having snacks that are quick to grab, easy to eat, and won’t distract you from your ride,” says John Vinton, representative of Aventon Bikes, a leader in electric bike innovation. “You want to keep moving while keeping your energy levels up.”

Here are John’s top cyclist-friendly, easy-to-grab, non-messy, nutrient-packed and fun-to-make foods to help you power through.

10 One-Handed Foods for Cyclists on the Move

1. Peanut Butter & Oat Protein Balls

High in protein and energy and no need to cook! Simply mix oats, peanut butter, honey, protein powder and dark chocolate chips. Roll into bite-sized balls and refrigerate until firm for a perfect on-the-go snack.

“These are a favourite for a quick, easy boost,” John mentions. “They’re portable and give you just the right amount of energy to keep going.”

2. Onigiri (Japanese Rice Balls)

A staple food of Japan, Onigiri are a fantastic, compact option. Typically filled with tuna or salmon, they’re wrapped in nori (seaweed), which makes them easy to hold. Simply shape sushi rice around your filling and sprinkle with salt for an ideal one-handed snack.

“Onigiri are great because they’re more than meets the eye! Packed with carbs and protein, they may seem small but they’re so filling,” John highlights.

3. Breakfast Burritos

Breakfast burritos aren’t just for mornings – they’re a great anytime snack for cyclists. Cook a breakfast meat of your choice, then scramble some eggs with sautéed veggies and/or cheese, roll it all up in a tortilla, wrap in foil and you’re set. Toasting the tortilla in a panini press is optional.

“Burritos provide protein and veggies in every bite, and they’re easy to eat with one hand – perfect for those on the go,” John tells us. “Warm or cold, they’re delicious and energising.”

4. Sweet Potato & Black Bean Wraps

These wraps are a nutrient-rich option packed with fibre and flavour. Spread mashed sweet potato on a tortilla, top with black beans, cumin, lime juice, and cilantro, then wrap tightly. They’re easy to carry and even easier to eat.

“The combination of carbs and protein makes these wraps an excellent choice for sustained energy,” says John.

5. Energy Bars with Dates & Nuts

Energy bars are a classic choice for cyclists, and these homemade ones with dates, nuts, and coconut are no exception. Blend the ingredients, press into a pan, refrigerate, and slice into bars.

“These bars are full of natural sugars and healthy fats, which makes them perfect for a quick energy boost,” John points out.

6. Spinach & Feta Muffins

Savoury muffins might sound unusual for cycling, but they’re filled with energy-giving ingredients. Mix flour, eggs, spinach, and feta, bake in muffin tins, and you’ve got a one-handed snack loaded with protein and nutrients.

“Muffins like these are light but filling, perfect for a mid-ride snack,” John suggests.

7. Banana Oat Bars

Banana oat bars are chewy, naturally sweet, and great for sustained energy. Simply mash bananas, mix with oats, dried fruit, and peanut butter, press into a pan, bake, and slice into bars.

“These bars are easy to pack and give you a healthy dose of fibre and carbs,” John says. “Great for longer rides when you need to stay energised.”

8. Hummus & Veggie Pita Pockets

For a lighter option, fill pita pockets with creamy hummus and crunchy veggies like cucumber, carrots, and bell peppers. Wrap in foil for easy handling while riding.

“These are fresh, flavorful, and provide a mix of carbs and healthy fats,” says John. “Plus, they’re easy to hold and eat.”

9. Chicken Caesar Wraps

For something heartier, try a chicken Caesar wrap. Toss shredded chicken with Caesar dressing, add lettuce, and wrap it all up in a tortilla. These protein-rich wraps are filling and easy to handle.

“These are perfect for a protein punch when you need to refuel,” says John. “Plus, they’re delicious.”

10. Almond Butter & Chia Jam Sandwiches

For a sweet and energising snack, make almond butter and chia jam sandwiches. Spread almond butter on whole-grain bread, add chia jam, and cut into small, easy-to-eat pieces.

“These sandwiches give you healthy fats, fibre, and natural sugars, making them a perfect snack for any ride,” John explains.

John Vinton, the representative of Aventon Bikes, commented:

“As a cyclist, it’s important to stay energised while on the move. You need snacks that are practical but also packed with the right nutrients to fuel your ride. While convenience is a priority, remember that what you eat plays a huge role in maintaining your stamina and performance over long distances. Foods like protein balls, burritos, and wraps are great because they combine carbs, proteins, and healthy fats in one bite, giving you the energy to keep going without having to stop for a full meal.

“The key is choosing snacks that won’t slow you down. One-handed, non-messy options like rice balls or energy bars are perfect for cyclists who need a quick boost on the go. And let’s not forget about flavour; these snacks should be enjoyable, so you’ll actually look forward to eating them while riding. It’s about balance and convenience but most of all—enjoying the journey.”
