Science-Backed Erectile Dysfunction Topical Gel Treatment Is Set To Improve The Mental Wellbeing Of Millions Of Men As 67% Of Sufferers Admit To Feeling Ashamed Or Embarrassed
Worrying new research has discovered the distressing mental impact of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) as 67% of sufferers say they feel ashamed or embarrassed because of their condition.[1] The research, conducted by Eroxon® – makers of the first clinically proven over-the-counter (OTC) topical ED therapy – has unearthed some harrowing statistics around the consequences of ED. Nearly half of men with ED (47%) admit that their condition has reduced them to tears or left them struggling emotionally.
Dr Catherine Hood, specialist in sexual medicine and psychosexual therapist and a member of the Eroxon® ED Information Panel (EEDIP) — www.eroxon.co.uk – explains that the issues so many ED sufferers are facing will only get worse as the number of people with ED increases.
“An ageing population and the rise in obesity, diabetes and other health problems associated with ED will likely lead to more men having to endure the physical and mental impact of this condition. Standard ED treatments, specifically phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5i’s) aren’t always reliable as they typically take up to an hour to work[2]-destroying lovemaking – and aren’t always suitable for men with other health conditions or those on specific prescription medicines.”
As it is, around half of men over the age of 40 will experience ED, while one study reported that more than a quarter of new ED cases are now also diagnosed in men under 40.[3] According to the Eroxon® data, 60% of men aged 18 to 24 and 63% of those aged 25 to 44 confirmed they had struggled with ED, compared to just 28% of over 65s.
ED sufferers also admitted that their condition is a major driver for lower self-confidence or self-esteem (44%), as well as sleep and mood issues. GP and TV media medic, Dr Hilary Jones says: “It doesn’t matter how old you are; ED can impact you in and out of the bedroom. The Eroxon® data is a huge cause for concern, as ED is contributing to the negative mental welfare of so many men.”

An Australian study of men who developed ED after prostate surgery also reported that men with ED consistently admitted feeling less of a man or no longer a man. This was linked to a number of negative responses and emotions including depression, embarrassment, fear of being stigmatised and diminished self-worth.[4]
On top of the shame, emasculation, stress, embarrassment and anxiety, ED is also contributing to the downfall of relationships, according to the Eroxon® data.
A staggeringly high 90% of men with ED report that it has strained their relationship and 39% admit their ED had caused them heartbreak along the way. Despite, 64% of men stating that talking about their ED with their partner was helpful, 69% of men with ED find it difficult to discuss their intimacy issues with a health professional and more than half struggle to talk to their partner about their problems, or they avoid the subject altogether.1
Many of the fears and doubts highlighted in studies and research have been explored in an emotional Coronation Street storyline — when lovable cabbie Tim Metcalfe, played by Joe Duttine, developed erectile dysfunction after triple by-pass surgery. Joe says, “The Coronation Street scriptwriters have never shied away from tackling difficult or controversial topics, so it’s perhaps surprising the show hadn’t explored ED earlier.”
“It’s such a common issue yet it’s still quite taboo, which is why it helps that shows such as Coronation Street ensure it’s out there and people know about it. Having a friendly character going through the same issue is relatable to so many men as well as partners of these men, and it helps men to feel at ease and far more comfortable to talk about it. If we keep talking about ED, it will help men to feel comfortable getting help. It doesn’t need to be a topic we shy away from,” says Joe.
Dr Janine David, a specialist in men’s and women’s health and a member of the Eroxon® ED Information Panel (EEDIP) — www.eroxon.co.uk — says: “These sad statistics will hopefully soon change thanks to the launch of Eroxon,® the first clinically-proven topical gel to help treat ED.”
Bedroom Spontaneity – Introducing An ED Innovation That Works In 10 Minutes
It’s good news for ED sufferers who can now access an over-the-counter treatment for their ED, helping them to get an erection in just 10 minutes.
Dr Catherine Hood says: “The rapid action of Eroxon® restores spontaneity to lovemaking and because it is applied directly to the head of the penis, using the gel becomes a natural part of foreplay.”

Like the PDE5i’s before it, Eroxon® achieves an erection by increasing blood flow to the penis. But, unlike the system-wide action of the traditional oral therapies, Eroxon® achieves this vasodilation via a novel evaporative and cooling action developed by the UK pharmaceutical company Futura Medical.
Speaking of the research which has been conducted on Eroxon® – Dr Catherine Hood reveals: “The efficacy and safety of Eroxon® has been confirmed in two Phase 3 studies, which showed the gel is effective in mild, moderate, and severe ED — and its unique proprietary action leads to an erection within 10 minutes for over 60% of men. Like the PDE5i’s before it, Eroxon® achieves an erection by increasing blood flow to the penis, but by a completely different mechanism. Unlike the system-wide action of these older oral therapies, Eroxon® achieves this vasodilation via a novel evaporative and cooling action developed by the UK pharmaceutical company Futura Medical.[5]
“This physical mode of action begins within minutes of the gel being applied to the glans, or head of the penis. As the gel evaporates, it activates a rapid cooling sensation followed by gradual warming. This stimulates pressure and temperature-sensitive free-nerve endings in the glans penis, which increases blood flow to the corpus cavernosum — two bands of spongy tissue within the penis which fill with blood and leads to an erection. The efficacy of Eroxon® has been demonstrated in two Phase 3 trials[6] in 300 men with mild, moderate, and severe ED. These trials — which investigated improvement in their erectile function compared with baseline – provided the evidence to support EU CE mark and UKCA authorisation as well as the FDA for Eroxon® approval in the US in June 2023, two months after the novel therapy was available in the UK.[7]
“The first Phase-3 trial was a 12-week multi-centre double-blind trial in 250 men who all used Eroxon® (FM 57 trial name). Before using the therapy, participants were monitored for four weeks to establish the extent of their ED, which was measured using three internationally authorised measures – International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), Sexual Encounter Profile -SEP 2 and SEP3.
“Efficacy improved after the first dose and men achieved an erection within 10 minutes in 60% of applications. Two thirds (63%) of men using Eroxon® achieved or exceeded the Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) — the benchmark for a meaningful response.
“At 12 weeks, men using Eroxon® showed significant improvement from baseline across all measures, with the response increasing in line with the severity of their ED. Four in five (80%) of those with the most severe ED met, and in some cases exceeded, MCID. In men with moderate ED, 59% met or, again in some cases, exceeded MCID and in those with mild ED it was 61%. Reported side effects were minimal.[8]

“The second Phase 3 study was a 24-week trial in 50 men using Eroxon®. Trial FM 71 was primarily designed to confirm efficacy beyond 12 weeks and included a head-to-head comparison with tadalafil (5mg), which is widely used in the United States. The results, presented at the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM) Congress in 2023 demonstrated that Eroxon® achieved MCID in 61% of patients with ED at 24 weeks; with 55% of those with mild ED; 51% of men with moderate ED and 87% with severe ED achieving this clinical goal. Efficacy increased over the course of the trial and far fewer side-effects were reported by men using Eroxon®.”
Professor David Ralph, Consultant Urologist at St. Peter’s Andrology Centre & Institute of Urology, UCLH, London and Past President of the European Society of Sexual Medicine says, “The efficacy of Eroxon® is remarkable and approaches the efficacy of current first line therapy but with significantly lower adverse events.”
In summary, Dr Janine David notes: “Using Eroxon becomes a shared and pleasurable experience, increasing intimacy. As it can be purchased without a prescription, Eroxon also allows partners to take the lead if the ED sufferer is reluctant or too embarrassed to seek help. It’s a breakthrough for ED and we can only hope it will relieve the mental burden so many men – young and old – are experiencing.”
