Istanbul has been crowned the most affordable destination for food lovers to visit in 2024, in the latest study carried out by discount experts at the e-commerce platform, Wethrift.
The top destinations for food lovers were identified based on several factors, including the number of fast food restaurants (Trip Advisor), the number of ‘cheap eats’ (Trip Advisor), the average cost of a meal (Numbeo), the cost of a meal for two in a mid-range establishment (Numbeo) and the number of 4 Star+ restaurants (Trip Advisor) for an overall score out of 50.

The bustling city of Istanbul received a total score of 40 out of a possible 50. Whether sampling the tasty local cuisine at one of the 6,750 restaurants rated 4-stars and up, or seeking out the low-cost dishes at one of Tripadvisor’s 1,591 “cheap eat” locations, the country’s largest city has something to suit every palate..
The study revealed that the average cost of a meal in the city is a very affordable $8.97 (£7.21), according to Numbeo, making Istanbul one of the most affordable cities for foodies to stretch their budgets this year.
The Indonesian paradise of Bali secured the second spot for the most affordable destinations for foodies, receiving a total score of 39.5/50 and being narrowly pipped to the post by Istanbul.
The island boasts 2,503 restaurants listed under cheap eats, with the average cost of meal an extremely affordable $2.57 (£2.07), one of the most affordable destinations in the study.
And with 5,591 restaurants listed as 4 star and above, the popular destination attracts plenty of foodies, in search of classic Balinese cuisine, such as nasi goreng, a popular rice dish containing pieces of meat and vegetables. There’s also plenty of classic vegetarian dishes available on the island, making Bali a perfect destination for food lovers of all kinds.
