A brand new study from the team at online discount platform wethrift has uncovered popular tourist destinations offering the best experience for international food lovers, with London ranking in 8th position.
The trends team crunched the numbers to reveal the best foodie destinations, including the number of fast food restaurants, the number of ‘cheap eats’ according to Trip Advisor, the average cost of a meal, the cost of a meal for two in a mid-range establishment, and the number of 4 Star+ restaurants, assigning each city an overall score out of 50.

The top 10 most affordable foodie destinations were revealed as follows:
Istanbul – 40/50
Bali – 39.5/50
Bangkok – 37.1/50
New Delhi – 35.5/50
Hanoi – 32.2/50
Rome – 31.6/50
Paris – 31.6/50
London – 31.2/50
Barcelona – 31.2/50
Phuket – 29.8/50
The UK capital was beaten by European neighbours Paris, Rome, and Istanbul.
Analysing TripAdvisor data, the study revealed that London boasts an impressive 10,000 restaurants rated 4 stars and above. With 2,763 restaurants listed under ‘cheap eats’ and 1,733 fast food restaurants listed on the platform, there’s something to satisfy every taste palette.
However, the average cost of a single meal and a meal for 2 in the mid-range is where London took a hit, struggling to compete against many of the more affordable locations analysed.
Istanbul, Turkey took the top spot, receiving a total score of 40/50 in comparison to London’s 31.2/50. Istanbul ranked highly in the study due to the vast number of fast food restaurants, cheap eats, and 4 star+ restaurants. The average cost of a meal in Istanbul is a very affordable £7.27 ($8.97), in comparison to London’s average coming in above double at £18.43 ($22.74).

Methodology: The team ranked the best destinations for food lovers based on: the number of fast food restaurants (Trip Advisor), number of ‘cheap eats’ (Trip Advisor), the average cost of a meal (Numbeo), the cost of a meal for two in mid-range (Numbeo) and the number of 4 star + restaurants (Trip Advisor) for an overall score out of 50.
