Pharmacist reveals the dangers of developing ‘dickmorphia’

penis size

Penis size has long been a debated and contentious topic, with only 35 percent of respondents confessing they were happy with theirs in a previous study

But despite the endless pursuit by researchers to find the average size for flaccid and erect penises, with multiple studies producing varied results, is knowledge really power? Or is the quest for the perfect length setting unrealistic expectations for some?

So, what are the dangers of this never-ending ‘dickmorphia’ – the term used to describe when someone is constantly concerned about the size of their penis without an erection due to unrealistic expectations.

Kiran Jones, Pharmacist at Oxford Online Pharmacy reveals all…

#1 Anxiety and depression

The constant comparison to others and quest for knowledge is bound to get you down when it comes to a body part you have very little control of.

But dickmorphia is a variant of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) that’s otherwise known as small penis anxiety (SPA). Sufferers can become fixated on penis size, leading to feelings of shame or embarrassment that can have effects on their mental state.

To overcome this, avoid consuming too much news that states what the ‘average penis size’ is as everyone is different, and lean on medical professionals for advice or treatment options. Seeking help to identify triggers or undergoing cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can be beneficial to help manage your anxieties.

#2 Problems in relationships

Studies have found that men with BBD are prone to erectile dysfunction, orgasmic function and intercourse satisfaction, which will likely have an impact on relationships and sexual relations.

These can all be treated with the right treatment plan, but it’s vital that if you’re suffering in this way, you seek support, whether that be from a professional or a partner.

Rather than letting it get in the way of your relationship, express any concerns you might be having with your partner. They’ll likely be able to provide you with the reassurance you need or accompany you to sex therapy sessions where you can work through anxieties together.

#3 Potential medication abuse

While some people might actually require the appropriate medication due to erectile dysfunction as a result of increased issues and anxieties, others may worryingly buy into theories that they can make your penis bigger.

Medications such as Sildenafil (Viagra), Vardenafil, Tadalafil (Cialis) or Avanafil (Stendra) temporarily increase blood flow to the penis when you get sexually aroused, which if you’re a ‘grower’ will no doubt instantly give you a few more inches.

However, the effects only last for a matter of hours and are not long or everlasting.

Abusing their effects in this way could also result in side effects such as headaches, body aches and pains, digestive system problems, dizziness, vision changes, flushes, congestion or a runny nose. And in severe cases, priapism (long-lasting erections), sudden changes in hearing or complete vision loss.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, consult your doctor or pharmacist for additional support and advice immediately.
