Gill Meller Releases Single Cask Whisky with Pioneering Organic Distillery Nc’nean

Award winning chef, author and food writer Gill Meller is set to release his single cask whisky this month in partnership with Scotland’s leading organic whisky distillery Nc’nean, who are known for pioneering sustainable and innovative production.
In July last year, Gill made the long winding journey from his home in the south west of England, to Nc’nean’s small distillery on the west coast of Scotland. The mission? To deliver a British ex- rum cask to be filled with Nc’nean’s already maturing whisky.
Excitingly, the limited release of 282 bottles is now ready to drink. UK customers will be able to purchase bottles of this unique and unrepeatable single cask whisky with flavours of spiced orange, herbal toffees and candied peaches from the 21st March.

Typical of Nc’nean distillery, this release will be bottled in 100% post-consumer-recycled glass. The British ex-Rum cask was previously maturing at B Corp certified Devon based Rum distillery, Two Drifters, who like Nc’nean are driven by creating delicious tasting spirits that have a minimal impact on the environment. The rum cask has brought delicious flavours of orange rind and root spices.
To mark the launch, next month on the 26th of April, Nc’nean and Gill Meller will host a celebratory party and feast at Devon’s renowned culinary destination, River Cottage. The evening will include a seasonal organic menu at the feasting tables and a guided whisky tasting led by Nc’nean’s founder Annabel Thomas. Tickets for the almost sold out event can be purchased here.
Gill Meller said “I’m really excited for this whisky to be released! It was a rather treacherous journey delivering the cask to Nc’nean, and this bottling is a great reflection of a wonderful joint project between two teams of intrepid adventurers. It’s great to celebrate our similar missions, to make delicious things with the lowest impact on nature”.
Annabel Thomas said “The bottling of this single casks represents nearly a year of collaboration between Nc’nean and Gill and I’m so excited to see the wonderful whisky come to life, plus have the chance to share and celebrate the whisky at River Cottage!”.
In 2021 Nc’nean became the first whisky distillery in the UK to be verified as net zero carbon emissions for scopes 1 and 2. They are B Corp certified and use only organic Scottish barley in the distillery which is powered entirely by renewable energy.
Nc’nean’s innovative distilling methods led them to win Craft producer of the year at the 2023 Icons of Whisky Awards. The small female-led distillery was also ranked 21st in Drinks International’s Top 50 Most Admired Whisky brands in the world 2023. Nc’nean was the only new Scotch whisky to make the top 25, putting the fledgling distillery amongst some of the world’s biggest heritage brands.
