The ten most expensive countries for an overnight stay in hospital, revealed!

While we all believe that it would never happen to us, sometimes circumstances out of our control mean we end up needing emergency medical treatment in hospital while on holiday, whether that’s for food poisoning, broken bones or something else.
But while many of us take out travel insurance policies that help to cover these costs, one-third (30%) of Brits have admitted that they don’t always buy travel insurance for trips abroad – that’s according to a new study from Staysure.
But without the correct cover in place, how much would an overnight stay in a hospital abroad actually cost you?

As part of the Hospital Costs report, the team at Staysure has analysed data from the World Health Organisation, to identify which countries are most expensive for an overnight stay in hospital and how holidaymakers could better spend the money, if they take out a good travel insurance policy.
According to the report, it was Monaco that was revealed to be the holiday destination that was most expensive to be hospitalised in. Often referred to as a ‘millionaires playground’, an overnight stay in hospital in the country starts at an eye-watering £2,400.
To put this into perspective, this is enough money to fund two premium economy return flights from London to New York.

Taking second place on the list was Luxembourg, with costs of a hospital bed per day starting at around £1,500 – worryingly this is roughly the UK’s average annual cost to fuel a car.
Other popular countries making the top ten included Norway (which was the third most expensive), where the bill for medical attention started at £1,150, and Australia, which had a £700 fee for an overnight stay in hospital. This money could otherwise be spent on four first-class train tickets from London to Edinburgh.
