The ‘Grate’ British Toastie Off: Nation’s Favourite Cheese Toastie Recipe revealed

Lagomchef

New research today reveals the formula for the perfect cheese toastie, as almost half (47%) of Brits say the iconic dish is their ultimate comfort food.

Violife, the UK’s leading plant based cheese alternative brand, commissioned the research to uncover our favourite recipe for the classic snack, helping those doing Veganuary to stay on track for another week.

To make it easy for people to stick to their plant based resolutions, without missing out on their favourite snack, Violife has partnered with TikTok sensation Lagomchef to create a plant based spin on the iconic dish.

Cheese Toastie Recipe

The study reveals that the nation has specific views on how they like their toastie to be made, even including a five-centimetre melted ‘cheese stretch’. Classic mature cheddar is the number one filling choice for many (72%) and, whilst 42 per cent think the perfect cheese toastie must be cut diagonally into two triangles, it divided crowds as nearly as many (39%) believe that two rectangular portions is best. Nearly four in 10 are ‘toastie purists’ who believe that nothing should be added inside or on top of their cheesy morsel. For those who do, onion marmalade, caramelised onions, Worcestershire sauce and Ketchup were popular additions.

The formula also includes exactly how toastie lovers prefer to make their favourite snack, with 44 per cent opting to use a toastie maker, as 62 per cent reckon the griddle marks add to the flavour. Meanwhile, 31 per cent believe that the snack should only ever be made under the grill.

For those looking to experiment with new recipes and meals this year (18%), the Lagomchef shares his own mouth-watering plant based toastie recipe. With his infamous creative flair he adds a mixture of Violife Creamy (the added hero to this) with Violife Cheddarton, for the ultimate indulgent and satisfying cheeezy filling, to medium sliced white bread. For an extra twist, he whips up sweet, sticky caramelised onions before grilling his toastie until hot, crispy and deliciously comforting.

Jess Millner, Senior Brand Manager at Violife said “It’s clear from our research that January is a month where many struggle to stick to their goals, such as trying out a more plant based diet.

“We’re thrilled to be able to collaborate with the Lagomchef on creating his delicious twist on the classic cheese toastie, ensuring that whether you already follow a plant based diet, or if you’re just trying it out, you can still savour every bite of that indulgent, creamy cheeezy toastie .”

Martyn Odell, the Lagom Chef, said “January shouldn’t be about self-punishment and having a truly miserable time. The month is tough enough as it is, so why deprive yourself of delicious things like cheese toasties? I’ve loved working with Violife to create a plant based alternative to one of my own, and the nation’s, favourite dishes.”
