Planning A New Year’s Getaway? You Could be Risking Your Gadgets While Abroad

With Christmas officially over and the January blues settling in, many Brits will be jumping at the chance to escape the UK for some sun, but a recent study has revealed that half of holidaymakers (53%) could be risking their gadgets while abroad in 2024.

The team at UK travel insurance company Staysure, has surveyed 2,000 Brits across the UK, to discover their attitudes to travelling with gadgets and if covering their tech is something they factor into holiday prep.

The survey revealed that for many Brits planning a New Years getaway, covering gadgets like phones, tables, hair straighteners and games consoles wasn’t a top priority, with over half of those surveyed (53%) reporting it isn’t something they always consider when buying travel insurance.

Despite gadget cover not being at the top of many Brits travel agendas, 1 in 10 (10%) reported that they had previously lost or damaged a device when abroad.

A further 28% of respondents also admitted that they are more worried about losing their phone than their wallet abroad – indicating that gadget cover should be a bigger concern when planning a January getaway.

Kelly Johnstone, Travel Insurance Expert, adds:

“It’s not surprising that the research shows that our tech plays such a big part in our holidays. We all use technology in one way or another in our everyday lives so why should holidays be any different?”

“As the findings of the study suggest, the average amount of money spent on gadgets and electronic devices often runs into the high hundreds. Sometimes it runs into the thousands, which could lead to a huge dent in bank accounts should they be lost or stolen. While paying for the right cover is an extra cost initially, it could save you significant amounts of money further down the road.”
