With an estimated value of £278,704[9], Cena’s insurance expenses for the Mercedes-SLR McLaren would have surpassed the actual value of the car in less than a decade[10] .

Up next is American television host Jay Leno’s Ford GT, with an average annual insurance cost of £25,033[11]. Of all the celebrities analysed, Jay Leno has the highest valued car – the McLaren F1 – which is valued at £15,966,720[12]. Leoni Moninska, classic car insurance expert, explains the importance in insuring classic vehicles:
“These staggering annual insurance costs for celebrities and their classic cars highlight the importance of having adequate classic car insurance. As these cars are usually unique and often are incredibly highly valued, it becomes crucial to have coverage that provides protection against risks and ensures correct compensation in case of damage or theft.
Owning a classic vehicle can become quite the financial commitment so it is imperative that you choose an insurance policy that meets your specific requirements, and will provide you the correct amount of coverage. Benefits of having classic car insurance include:
- Value protection: When you have classic car insurance, you can obtain an agreed-upon value policy, which means that you will receive the full value of your vehicle in the event of theft, damage, or loss. This prevents your investment into the car as classic cars often gain value over time.
- Limited usage protection: Classic cars are typically not used as daily drivers, which means they are often driven less frequently and for shorter distances. Classic car insurance recognises this limited usage and can provide coverage options that reflect your vehicle’s reduced risk, potentially leading to lower premiums.
- Access to knowledgeable experts: Many classic car insurance providers have specialists who understand the unique needs and intricacies of insuring vintage vehicles. These experts can provide guidance on maintenance, preservation, and restoration to help you protect your classic car for the long term.”
