Unlocking Financial Confidence: Overcoming Financial Avoidance for a Brighter Future

Financial Avoidance

A survey from Hodge revealed that 75% of people believe they will save less this year than the previous year, and more than half have had to dip into their savings for everyday expenses.

In a generation where many are ‘financially avoidant’ (cautious with their finances), our data reveals intriguing regional disparities. Over a third of Londoners (38%) prioritise saving for holidays, while 61% of Scots prioritise saving for emergencies. These insights shed light on the diverse financial preferences across the UK.

Christie Cook, Managing Director of Retail at Hodge said: “In the current economic climate, it’s understandable that people are finding it hard to think about saving. With inflation impacting the cost of living and interest rates fluctuating, it’s challenging to determine if it’s a worthwhile investment.

“One reason for financial avoidance is the uncertainty of choosing the right account for your needs. There are options like Cash ISAs, ideal for those who want to make tax-free savings on a large sum of money that can be withdrawn at a small cost, or Fixed Rate Bonds, suitable for those who don’t need to access their money for a fixed period of time.

“When you embark on your savings journey, it’s essential to strike a healthy balance between saving and living. With the hustle and bustle of daily life, you might want to treat yourself to little luxuries, whether that be a coffee, takeaway or a night out with your friends.

“You could start by setting aside a small, manageable amount every month, whether it’s £10, £20, or even £50. Life is unpredictable, so having something to fall back on in case of financial emergencies is always a wise decision.”
